Hebei University is a first-class university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hebei Province, and is a first-class university supported by Hebei Province. The school was founded in 1921 and was originally named Tianjin Technology and Business University. The school is located at No. 141 Machang Road, Tianjin. At the beginning of its establishment, the school was established as an undergraduate institution and named as a university. Adhering to the school motto of "educating promising young people in China, running a university that cultivates both morality and intelligence, and promoting China's modernization", it is committed to cultivating business talents. In 1933, the school was renamed Tianjin Technology and Business College, and the school motto tradition of "seeking truth from facts" was established during this period. During the Anti-Japanese War, the school did not avoid disasters, but insisted on running schools in adversity, gathering a large number of famous teachers and giants. At that time, it enjoyed the reputation of "a magnificent university in the north, and a towering industry and commerce". Afterwards, the school went through different periods of Private Jingu University, National Jingu University, Tianjin Normal College, and Tianjin Normal University. In 1960, the Hebei Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government decided to build a comprehensive university named after the province, and Tianjin Normal University was rebuilt into a comprehensive university and named Hebei University. In 1970, it moved to Baoding City, Hebei Province. In 2005, Hebei Provincial Workers' Medical College and its affiliated hospital were merged into Hebei University. Although the school has changed its name several times and has gone through several twists and turns, its history of running schools has never been interrupted, and it has developed into an influential comprehensive university. The construction and development of the school has received strong support from the Hebei Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial Government, the Ministry of Education and other national ministries and commissions. In 2002, it became one of the five universities in the country that were key supported by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it became a provincial and ministerial co-construction university jointly built by the Hebei Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it became one of the 14 universities selected for the "Central and Western Universities Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project". In 2016, it became a key construction university of the "one province, one school" in the central and western regions of the country. In the same year, it was listed as a key supported first-class university and first-class discipline construction university by Hebei Province. In 2018, the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Hebei Province signed the "Agreement on the Joint Construction of Hebei University by the Ministry and the Province", and Hebei University became one of the national "joint construction" universities. In 2020, Hebei Province formulated an implementation plan to support the joint construction of Hebei University by the Ministry and the Province. Taking the "joint construction of the Ministry and the Province" as an opportunity, the school connects with the cultural tourism industry, pharmaceutical industry and modern green industry in Hebei Province, focusing on the construction of the Yanzhao culture discipline group and the life science and green development discipline group, and has made important progress in the protection and development of Yanzhao culture and the ecological governance of the Baiyangdian Basin. The school has a complete range of disciplines, distributed in 12 major categories including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and art. There are 86 undergraduate majors, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 17 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 44 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 36 types of master's professional degree authorization categories, 13 postdoctoral research mobile stations, and 1 postdoctoral research workstation. Six disciplines, including chemistry, materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, plant and animal science, pharmacology and toxicology, are among the top 1% in the ESI world ranking. The school has a complete education system for training bachelors, masters and doctors, with more than 28,000 undergraduates and 11,000 doctoral and master's students. It has one national teaching team and two national teaching masters; 41 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites and 21 first-class undergraduate courses; 3 national ideological and political demonstration courses; 4 national "new engineering" projects and 5 "new liberal arts" projects; 3 national virtual teaching and research room construction pilots; 14 national "quality engineering" projects such as national experimental teaching demonstration centers and characteristic majors, 12 national "undergraduate teaching engineering" projects such as comprehensive reform pilots and excellent talent training plans, and 2 national makerspaces; 5 majors have passed the professional certification of the Ministry of Education. The school has built a national college student cultural quality education base, a national professional and technical personnel continuing education base, a Chinese Yan'an spirit education base, and a national language and writing promotion base. It is a typical demonstration university for graduate employment in the country, a typical university for innovation and entrepreneurship in the country, the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the first batch of national "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model construction pilot universities. The school insists on strengthening the school with talents and implements the "Kunyu Scholars" support plan. There are 3,416 faculty and staff, including 2,148 full-time teachers, and 66.1% of teachers have doctoral degrees; there are 50 national outstanding talents such as academicians of the two academies, national outstanding young scientists, "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", national teaching masters, national "Hundred Thousand Talents Project", young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to the country, and experts with special allowances from the State Council, and 252 high-level talents at the provincial and ministerial levels such as Yanzhao scholars and provincial excellent experts. The university has built 3 national and local joint engineering laboratories (centers), 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 1 national key laboratory co-built with enterprises, and 2 research institutes. At the same time, it has 32 key laboratories (bases) and engineering laboratories in Hebei Province, 28 key research bases (centers, think tanks) of humanities and social sciences in Hebei Province, 5 "2011" collaborative innovation centers in Hebei Province, 3 basic discipline research centers in Hebei Province, and 1 collaborative innovation center co-built by the province and the ministry. In recent years, the university has undertaken 13 major projects of the National Social Science Fund, 4 major research projects of the Ministry of Education, and 3 social science research results have been selected into the "National Philosophy and Social Science Achievement Library"; in the China Nature Index ranking of Nature magazine, it ranks 84th among domestic universities. The university adheres to the opening up of education to the outside world, and has established cooperative and exchange relations with more than 100 universities in the world. It has the first non-independent legal person Sino-foreign cooperative education institution in Hebei Province, as well as Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, and has hosted 3 Confucius Institutes in South America, Asia and Africa. The university has built a talent training system for international students covering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. It is a pilot university of the "Training and Research Center for Overseas Students of the Ministry of Education", the first university in Hebei Province to accept Chinese government scholarship students, the first university in Hebei Province to build an undergraduate academic mutual recognition course (ISEC) project, and a university selected as a "Chinese Language Education Base" by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council.
