Anhui Normal University is the earliest institution of higher learning in Anhui. It is located in Wuhu, a national open city with the reputation of "Huizhou style and Anhui style, the city of thousands of lakes". It is close to the vast Yangtze River, surrounded by the beautiful Zhe Mountain, and has the natural beauty of Jiangnan. It is a university jointly established by the Anhui Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, a provincial key comprehensive university prioritized by the Anhui Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government, and a key construction university with high-level characteristics of Anhui Province. It has been selected as a national key Marxist university. The college (the only one in Anhui Province) and one of the first pilot units in the country to build a journalism school jointly established by the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Party Committee and the school won the title of the second "National Civilized Campus". The school’s predecessor was the Provincial Anhui University founded in Anqing City in 1928. It was renamed National Anhui University in 1946 and moved to Wuhu in December 1949. Later, it went through several stages of running schools, including Anhui Normal University, Hefei Normal University, Wannan University (the school was named by Liu Shaoqi), and Anhui Gongnong University. In 1972, with the approval of the State Council, it was officially named Anhui Normal University (Guo Moruo inscribed the school name). In 2005, Wuhu Normal College was integrated into Anhui Normal University.
