Beijing Language and Culture University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. It is the only international university named after "language" and whose main mission is to spread Chinese language and culture. It is known as the "small United Nations". Since its establishment, it has developed into a world-renowned university with international Chinese education as its feature, language education and research as its advantage, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines. Beijing Language and Culture University was born in the difficult pioneering period of New China's diplomatic career. It was founded under the personal care of Premier Zhou Enlai, and Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school in person. The predecessor of the school was the Higher Preparatory School for Foreign Students founded in 1962. In 1964, it was renamed "Beijing Language Institute" and became a training base for foreign students studying Chinese in China, foreign students studying foreign languages abroad, and Chinese teachers studying abroad. In 1996, it was renamed "Beijing Language and Culture University" and in 2002 it was named "Beijing Language and Culture University". The school has brought together a large number of experts and scholars with profound attainments and high moral integrity. Famous teachers such as Zhang Qingchang, Wang Huan, Sheng Cheng, Zhong Xu, Fu Weici, Yuan Shuren, Lv Bisong, and Fang Li have all worked here to promote literature and education. A large number of young and middle-aged scholars with profound academic knowledge and both moral integrity and talent are active in the front line of teaching and scientific research, becoming leaders and academic backbones in various disciplines. The school has the largest, most specialized, and strongest team of international Chinese teachers in colleges and universities across the country. As the earliest university to train Chinese teachers to go abroad, a large number of teachers go abroad to teach every year to spread Chinese and Chinese culture. More than 40 of the current teachers have been selected for major national and provincial and ministerial talent projects. It has 2 national excellent teaching teams and 4 municipal excellent teaching teams. The Chinese International Education Professional Teacher Team was awarded the title of the first batch of Huang Danian-style teacher teams in colleges and universities. Based on the development of international Chinese education and the need to improve international communication capabilities, the school has built a multi-disciplinary subject system that is interconnected and mutually supportive. As the pioneer, founder and leader of the international Chinese education discipline, the school has established China's first undergraduate major in Chinese language for foreign students, the first batch of undergraduate and graduate Chinese majors, the first doctoral program in linguistics and applied linguistics for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, and the first teacher education college dedicated to training international Chinese education teachers. In recent years, the school has adhered to the development strategy of "highlighting characteristics, strengthening advantages, taking points to lead the whole, and comprehensively improving", focusing on strengthening the construction of discipline connotation, continuously leading the innovative development of international Chinese education, and giving full play to the advantages of linguistics to promote the cross-integration of related disciplines. The school's comprehensive strength is showing a rapid development trend. At present, the discipline covers nine disciplines, including literature, science, engineering, economics, management, law, education, history, and art. It has 2 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 2 postdoctoral mobile stations, 11 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 9 master's professional degree authorization points. Among them, linguistics and applied linguistics are national key disciplines, and there is also 1 first-level key discipline in Beijing, 10 second-level key disciplines in Beijing, and two disciplines, Chinese language and literature and country and regional studies, have been selected as "high-end disciplines of Beijing universities". BLCU is a leader in cultivating international talents who know and love China and an important base for cultivating outstanding talents in various fields. The school adheres to the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, upholds the school motto of "virtue, speech, and harmony in the world" and the university spirit of "patriotism, responsibility, honesty, truth-seeking, innovation, openness and tolerance", and focuses on cultivating friendly envoys of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries and various outstanding talents with professional knowledge, humanistic qualities, international vision, innovative spirit and practical ability. The school currently has 51 undergraduate majors, including 18 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 4 Beijing first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 Beijing key first-class major, 7 national characteristic majors, and 4 Beijing characteristic majors. The school strives to strengthen the training of top-notch innovative talents, and has established three top-notch talent training bases: the United Nations and International Organizations Talent Training Experimental Class, the Language Intelligence and Technology Experimental Class, and the Finance Professional Experimental Class. It has newly established the first linguistics department and the first "linguistics" undergraduate major in domestic universities, and the "Chinese International Communication" Chinese Language and Literature Top Students Training Base has been selected as the National Basic Discipline Top Students Training Program 2.0 Base. So far, the school has trained more than 220,000 foreign students who are proficient in Chinese and familiar with Chinese culture for 189 countries and regions in the world, and has trained hundreds of thousands of outstanding talents for my country, many of whom have become well-known figures in academia, politics, and business. BLCU is an academic center for humanities and social science research and serving national strategies. The school actively conducts academic research on Chinese and foreign languages and cultures, vigorously promotes interdisciplinary research, and produces a large number of high-level cutting-edge scientific research results and high-quality policy advisory reports in the fields of country and regional studies, language intelligence, language cognition and brain science, and international Sinology. It comprehensively strengthens the construction of international communication capabilities, undertakes the national project of "Talent Database of Chinese and Foreign Sinologists and Translators and Chinese Culture Translation and Research Network", cooperates with the Central Propaganda Department to implement the "Asian Classics Translation Plan" proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, and promotes the translation and dissemination of Chinese culture. Give full play to the disciplinary and professional advantages of linguistics, deeply participate in the promotion and popularization of the national common language and characters, and make positive contributions to forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation. The school has 16 research centers (bases) at or above the provincial and ministerial levels. Among them, the Institute of Chinese International Education is one of the 100 key research bases of the Ministry of Education in humanities and social sciences, the Language Cognitive Science Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base is a "111 Plan" talent introduction platform supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Language Resource Protection Research Center is a professional institution of the National Language Commission to implement the national language resource protection project, and the Language Resource High-tech Innovation Center is one of the only two liberal arts high-tech innovation centers in Beijing universities, supported by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. The school edits and publishes 7 core academic journals, among which "Language Teaching and Research" and "World Chinese Teaching" have been selected as "my country's Most Internationally Influential Academic Journals (Humanities and Social Sciences)" for many years. BLCU is an important window for Chinese and foreign language education and Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges. The school has established cooperative and exchange relations with 406 universities and educational institutions in 76 countries and regions in the world, forming an all-round, multi-field, in-depth and fruitful pattern of opening up to the outside world. Every year, more than 6,000 international students from more than 140 countries (regions) are accepted to study at the school, nearly 100 foreign teachers are teaching at the school, and more than 1,500 foreign guests are received. Students from all over the world are learning together, and multiple cultures collide and blend. Brand campus activities with wide influence such as the "World Culture Festival" have been created, forming a unique international campus environment. Every year, more than 100 teachers are sent abroad to teach, and more than 400 students go abroad for exchange and study. The school is the first university in China to set up branches abroad. It currently has a Bangkok College in Thailand and a Tokyo Branch in Japan. It is one of the earliest universities to build Confucius Institutes. It has built 22 Confucius Institutes (Confucius Classrooms) in total, with outstanding school-running results. It has won the title of "Advanced Chinese Cooperative School of Confucius Institutes" many times.
