Urumqi Vocational University was established in 1985. It is the only comprehensive full-time general higher vocational college in Urumqi and the first higher vocational college established in Xinjiang after the reform and opening up. In 2007, with the approval of the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the former Urumqi Vocational University and Urumqi Adult Education College merged to form the new Urumqi Vocational University, which implemented a management system of co-construction by the district and the city and with the city as the main body. Urumqi Vocational University currently has 5 campuses, covering an area of 2,109.5 acres. The school has a total asset of 700 million yuan, with 224 on-campus laboratories (training) rooms and 259 off-campus internship and training bases, of which the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 103 million yuan, and the library has more than 950,000 books of various types (including electronic books). The school has 16 teaching units such as the School of Economics and Trade and 1 international cooperative education institution. There are 710 faculty members, including 473 full-time teachers. Teachers with the title of associate professor or above account for 32% of the total number of teachers, the proportion of "double-qualified" teachers is 88.47%, and the ratio of master and doctoral students is 56.7%. The school currently offers 63 majors, including 5 key majors for national backbone higher vocational colleges, 4 key majors supported by special central fiscal projects, 2 majors for service industry capacity building supported by central fiscal projects, 4 key majors for autonomous region demonstration schools, and 10 autonomous region specialty majors. The school's student quality and employment rate have always maintained a good trend. The rate of graduates with "double certificates" has reached 90%, and the employment rate has remained stable at around 95%. The school has now become a leading higher vocational college for the cultivation of technical and skilled talents in Xinjiang's modern service industry. It is a national demonstration backbone higher vocational college, an autonomous region demonstration higher vocational college, the chairman unit of the autonomous region's tertiary industry (modern service industry) vocational education park, and the leading higher vocational college of Urumqi Vocational Education Group. In 2015, it became the first batch of pilot colleges for intangible cultural heritage training of the Ministry of Culture. Its scientific research capabilities rank 67th among higher vocational colleges in China and 1st among higher vocational colleges in Xinjiang. In 2016, it was selected as one of the top 50 vocational colleges in China for service contribution. It is the first vocational college in the autonomous region to build a practical training (incubation) base for employment and entrepreneurship of college students. The incubation base has been awarded the "maker space" plaque at the third level by Urumqi City, the autonomous region and the country. The school has carried out Sino-foreign cooperation with PSB College in Singapore, and has opened four majors: logistics management, hotel management, electrical automation, and mechanical manufacturing and automation. It has established a "cultural center" with Dostoyevsky State University of Omsk State, Russian Federation, and realized the exchange of teachers and students. It has established in-depth cooperative relations with domestic universities such as Tongji University, Hubei University, and Guangdong Light Industry Vocational and Technical College.
