From the Suzhou River to the foot of Sheshan Mountain, East China University of Political Science and Law is one of the first batch of higher political science and law schools founded in New China. In June 1952, with the approval of the East China Military and Political Committee, the law, political and sociology departments of nine universities including St. John's University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Soochow University, Xiamen University, Hujiang University, Anhui University, Shanghai College and Aurora University were merged to form East China University of Political Science and Law at the former site of St. John's University. In 1958, the school was merged into the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences; in 1963, it was rebuilt and enrolled students the following year; in 1966, it stopped enrolling students and was abolished in 1972; in March 1979, it was approved by the State Council to resume the school for the second time. In 2003, the Songjiang campus was built and put into use. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed East China University of Political Science and Law. Over the years, the people of Huazheng University have followed the school motto of "Practice to Seek Knowledge, Be Moral and Respect the Law", and carried forward the spirit of "Rise in Adversity, Forge Ahead in Distress, and Excellence in Glory". They have built the school into a multidisciplinary university with distinctive characteristics, mainly focusing on law, and also including economics, management, literature, engineering and other disciplines. It is known as the "Oriental Pearl of Legal Education". The school is a high-level local university in Shanghai. It currently has three campuses in Songjiang, Changning and Putuo, covering an area of more than 750,000 square meters; it has 26 undergraduate majors, 19 colleges (departments), and more than 180 scientific research institutions; there are more than 1,300 faculty and staff, 57% of whom have senior professional titles, and more than 18,000 students. The school has established graduate education since 1981, and has the right to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level disciplines of law and public administration, and the right to confer master's degrees in 8 first-level disciplines. The school is one of the first batch of excellent legal talent education and training bases of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Excellent Legal Talent Training Base, and Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Training Base. The school's international exchanges and cooperation are becoming increasingly in-depth. As of September 2023, it has signed agreements with 191 universities and institutions in 46 countries and regions, as well as 9 international and regional organizations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Asian Law Society, and the European Law Firms Association. Looking to the future, the school will carry forward the tradition of "teaching-centered, teacher-first, and student-based", adhere to the development concept of "open-door, open, and innovative", strengthen the development model of "teaching-based, academic-based, and talent-based", and build a development pattern of "first-class law and multi-disciplinary integration". Guided by Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we will adhere to the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, deepen higher education reform, explore new quality productivity, promote high-quality development, and strive to build East China University of Political Science and Law into a world-class political and legal university with Chinese characteristics, and strive to make new and greater contributions to national development, people's happiness, and the progress of human civilization. The school's current party secretary is Professor Guo Weilu and the president is Professor Ye Qing.
