The college was founded in 1955 and covers an area of 534.6 acres. It is the only power university in Shanxi Province, the only school run by a central enterprise in Shanxi Province, and a power vocational college that combines academic education with employee training, integrates higher vocational colleges and training centers, and integrates pre-employment education with post-employment education. It is a model higher vocational college in Shanxi Province, a construction unit of high-quality higher vocational colleges in Shanxi Province, the first batch of modern apprenticeship pilot units in Shanxi Province, the third batch of modern apprenticeship pilot units in the country, and the first batch of demonstration vocational education group cultivation units in the country. As the sponsor, State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company has invested a total of 1 billion yuan in the construction of the college in the past five years. It has become a national-level industry-education integration enterprise that has been focused on construction and cultivation in the early stage. Relying on the college to establish a skills training center, Linfen Electric School and Datong Electric School have been integrated into one management, forming a school-running pattern of "one body with two wings, connecting the north and the south, and radiating the whole province". The college has a three-dimensional connection with the enterprise and a team with the training center, realizing the integrated operation of the school and the enterprise, and the integrated management of teaching and training. The college has 4 national-level productive training bases, 9 provincial-level productive training bases, and 2 national-level vocational education training bases. It has 55 training programs and 23 higher vocational majors, and can provide teaching and training services for more than 6,000 students at the same time. It has undertaken technical skill competitions for China Electricity Council, State Grid, provincial companies, and local governments many times; carried out vocational skill evaluation for students and trainees, and formed a national vocational skill level certification pilot, 1+x certificate system pilot colleges, power industry skill appraisal stations and other skill talent evaluation platforms, realizing the orderly connection and comprehensive connection of pre-employment and post-employment evaluation of skilled personnel. The radiation of "two verticals and three horizontals" has far-reaching influence, and the "five platforms and four channels" have outstanding effects. The education and training functions radiate to 27 provinces and cities across the country. As the first higher vocational college in Shanxi Province to carry out Sino-foreign cooperative education, it has trained more than 1,000 students, of which 22 students went to Africa to participate in overseas project construction. In March 2021, the college was awarded the vice chairman unit of the "Belt and Road" Power Silk Road College Alliance. The college adheres to the guiding ideology of "moral education first, strict management", implements semi-military management, and has made outstanding achievements in moral education. It has been rated as a provincial "safe campus", and has been awarded "Shanxi Civilized Campus", "Shanxi Provincial Civilized Campus" and "State Grid Corporation Civilized Unit".
