Xi'an University of Science and Technology has a long history and profound cultural heritage. The history of the school can be traced back to the Mining and Metallurgy Department of the School of Engineering of Beiyang University, which was established in 1895. In 1938, it moved to the Mining and Metallurgy Department of Northwest Polytechnic Institute, merged into Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1957, and separated from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1958 to establish Xi'an Mining College. It was one of the only two five-year undergraduate colleges under the former Ministry of Coal Industry at that time. In 1998, the school implemented "central and local co-construction, mainly local management" and was transferred to Shaanxi Province. In 1999, it was renamed Xi'an Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2003 it was renamed Xi'an University of Science and Technology. The school is a university jointly built by the Ministry of Emergency Management and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, a university implementing the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education, a university implementing the National Construction of High-level Universities Publicly Sponsored Graduate Students Project, a university implementing the National Characteristic Key Discipline Project, a university implementing the National Central and Western Universities Basic Capacity Construction Project, a university implementing the National "14th Five-Year Plan" Education Power Promotion Project, a university building a high-level university in Shaanxi Province, and a national "double first-class" key cultivation university in Shaanxi Province. The school covers an area of 920,000 square meters, with two campuses in Yanta and Lintong, a graduate school and 20 colleges (departments). It has national key disciplines in safety technology and engineering, 8 provincial advantageous and characteristic (key) disciplines, covering 49 secondary disciplines. It has 34 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including the National Key Laboratory of Energy Coal Quality and Clean Conversion, the National Key Laboratory of Coal Industry Mining Engineering (provincial and ministerial level), and the Engineering Research Center for Western Coal Mine Safety of the Ministry of Education, 1 innovation team of the Ministry of Education, and 11 key scientific and technological innovation teams in Shaanxi Province. The school currently has 7 postdoctoral research stations, 7 first-level doctoral programs, 26 first-level master's programs, and 12 master's degree authorization points such as electronic information, machinery, materials and chemical engineering, resources and environment, energy and power, civil engineering and water conservancy, engineering management, business administration (MBA), accounting (MPAcc), applied statistics, translation, and international Chinese education, and 60 undergraduate majors. It has formed a school-running pattern with geosciences, safety and related disciplines as its characteristics, engineering as its main body, and coordinated development of engineering, science, literature, management, law, economics, education, and cross-disciplinary development. There are 26,000 full-time students. The school has more than 2,300 faculty and staff, more than 1,500 full-time teachers, more than 800 professors and associate professors, and more than 1,400 teachers have doctoral and master's degrees. Among them, 35 people have won the title of national talent, and 161 people have won the title of provincial talent. 47 people enjoy special government subsidies from the State Council. The school also has a high-level part-time faculty team consisting of more than 400 experts and professors, including 7 dual-appointed academicians. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the university has undertaken more than 8,600 scientific research projects, including 562 national projects such as major national science and technology projects, national key research and development plans, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the National Social Science Foundation. The total amount of scientific research funding contracts has exceeded 2.47 billion yuan, and it has won 3 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 384 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, and more than 3,646 authorized patents. The school actively promotes foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established close cooperative relations with nearly 60 universities in more than 20 countries and regions. It continues to give play to its disciplinary characteristics and advantages, and conducts scientific research cooperation with universities and enterprises in countries such as Russia, Poland, Romania and Bangladesh, using scientific and technological innovation to serve the "Belt and Road" initiative. The school has one national discipline innovation and intelligence base and two provincial and ministerial discipline innovation and intelligence bases. It is a selected university for the National Scholarship Council's International Cooperation Training Program for Innovative Talents, and one of the four founding universities of the "1+2+1 Sino-US Talent Training Program". It has jointly carried out two Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with the University of Tasmania and Macquarie University in Australia; and carried out 42 multi-level teacher-student exchange programs with universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Malaysia and other countries. It has recruited and trained more than 400 undergraduate, master and doctoral students and short-term international students from 32 countries.
