Qinghai University is located in the ancient plateau city - the summer capital Xining. The school was formerly known as Qinghai Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1958. In November 1960, it merged with Qinghai Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College, Qinghai Medical College, and Qinghai Institute of Finance and Economics to form Qinghai University, which was abolished in 1969. In 1971, Qinghai Institute of Industry and Agriculture was restored, with two major disciplines of engineering and agriculture. Qinghai University was restored in 1988. In October 1997, Qinghai College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was merged into Qinghai University. In January 2001, Qinghai Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Qinghai Academy of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, and Qinghai Vocational College of Finance and Economics were transferred to Qinghai University as a whole. In 2004, Qinghai Medical College was merged to form the new Qinghai University. At present, the school has developed into a teaching and research university with coordinated development of engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, economics, science, and law. The school covers an area of more than 3,000 acres and recruits students from all over the world and 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. Currently, there are 26,000 full-time students, including 5,000 graduate students and 21,000 undergraduates. The school has 5,429 faculty and staff (including 2,244 in teaching and research units and 3,185 in affiliated hospitals); 1,205 full-time teachers, including 700 doctors; currently, there are 305 senior professors (including 20 second-level professors) and 675 associate senior professors; there are 40 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council. Over the past 65 years, the university has fully implemented the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, and has always shouldered the important missions of talent cultivation, scientific research, social services, cultural inheritance and innovation, and international exchanges and cooperation. Since 2016, the university has been approved for 3,248 scientific research projects, including 11 national key research and development plans, with a total scientific research funding of 2.1 billion yuan and 1,001 scientific research results identified. The university has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Science and Technology Innovation Award of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, 3 National Excellence Awards, 119 provincial and ministerial awards and above, and 3 Qinghai Science and Technology Major Contribution Awards. The university insists on open education and continuously strengthens foreign exchanges and cooperation. It has signed more than 20 international cooperation memoranda, was selected into the "Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Program (111 Program)", and was approved as the "Tibetan Medicine International Cooperation Base (Qinghai)". The "Three Brothers" cooperation between Tsinghua University, the University of Auckland and Qinghai University has continued to develop, becoming a major "highlight" of Sino-Singapore cultural exchanges. The university actively promotes the deep integration of industry, academia and research, and actively serves the national strategy and regional economic and social development. It has formed distinct disciplinary advantages and school characteristics in the ecological protection of the Three Rivers Source, plateau agriculture and animal husbandry, plateau medicine, Tibetan medicine, salt lake chemical industry, new energy and new materials, and has cultivated a large number of application-oriented talents, making positive contributions to Qinghai's economic construction and social development.
