The Nanjing Artillery College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was established in 2011 by merging the former Artillery Command College of the People's Liberation Army and the Nanjing Branch of the Artillery College of the People's Liberation Army with the approval of the Central Military Commission. The predecessor of the former Artillery Command College was the "Yan'an Artillery School", the first military academy of the People's Liberation Army established in Nanniwan, Shaanxi in 1944. The predecessor of the Nanjing Branch of the Artillery College was the "Special Column Special Technical School" of the East China Field Army established in Mantangpo, Yishui, Shandong in March 1947. The two schools have trained more than 120,000 artillery and air defense command talents for the entire army. The Nanjing Artillery College is located on the site of the former Kuomintang Army Artillery School. The Kuomintang opened the first military school in the Republic of China here in 1931. It was the only artillery school in the country at that time, known as the "Tangshan Artillery School" in history, and its status was second only to the Army University and the Whampoa Military Academy.
