Guangdong Sports Vocational and Technical College (hereinafter referred to as "the school") was formerly the Guangdong Sports School founded in August 1956. It was upgraded to a full-time general higher vocational college in May 2003. It is the only sports higher vocational college in the province. In June 2020, the school was transferred from the Guangdong Provincial Sports Bureau to the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education. Since its establishment, the school has trained a large number of sports stars who have made outstanding contributions to the country, such as Xian Dongmei, Fu Haifeng, Jiang Jialiang, Sun Caiyun, and Dong Zhaozhi, as well as about 100,000 high-level technical and skilled talents in competitive sports and mass sports for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even the whole country. In 2013 and 2017, it was rated as a "National Advanced Unit for Mass Sports" (the highest award for national mass sports work) by the State General Administration of Sports twice. In September 2022, it was selected as a cultivation unit for the construction plan of high-level higher vocational colleges in Guangdong Province. The school adheres to the educational philosophy of “establishing new paths in learning and cultivating sports talents”, upholds the school motto of “civilized spirit, wild physique, innovative thinking and superb skills”, promotes the school spirit of “morality, joy of learning, harmony and innovation”, inherits the teaching style of “loving students, dedication, rigor and pragmatism”, practices the style of study of “inspiration, careful thinking, diligence and perseverance”, takes “high quality, establishing characteristics, strengthening services and promoting development” as the development goal, fully implements the party’s education policy, implements the fundamental task of cultivating morality and educating people, is based in Guangdong, faces the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, radiates across the country, educates people for the party and talents for the country, and cultivates high-quality sports skilled talents for the development of China’s sports cause and sports industry, and is committed to building a nationally renowned sports college. Land and Assets The school is located in the Olympic Sports Park, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, covering an area of 100,030.49 square meters (150.05 acres), with a building area of more than 80,000 square meters, a total value of 41.6654 million yuan for teaching and scientific research equipment, an average value of 8,253.84 yuan per student, and a total value of 492 million yuan for fixed assets. There are currently 56 on-campus training rooms, 125 off-campus training bases, and 280 industry-education integration and school-enterprise cooperation enterprises. 51 national vocational qualification skill training bases for the sports industry have been established in 21 prefecture-level cities across the province. The school library has a collection of more than 207,000 books. Institutional Setup The school has 7 party and government management agencies, including the Party and Government Office, Discipline Inspection and Supervision Office (Audit Department), Organization, Propaganda and United Front Department (Armed Department), Student Affairs Department (Party Committee Student Affairs Department), Human Resources Department (Party Committee Teacher Affairs Department), Academic Affairs Department, and General Affairs and Logistics Department; 7 teaching institutions, including the School of Competitive Sports, the School of Social Sports, the School of Sports Management, the School of Sports and Health, the School of Marxism, the School of Continuing Education, and the Basic Teaching Department; 4 auxiliary teaching institutions, including the Training Venue Center, the Library and Information Technology Service Center, the Science and Technology Center, and the Medical Clinic; 3 affiliated units under the Guangdong Provincial Sports Bureau, including the Guangdong Provincial Sports Industry Special Occupational Skills Certification Station, the Guangdong Provincial National Fitness Physical Rehabilitation Center, and the Guangdong Provincial Physical Fitness Measurement and Sports Fitness Guidance Station. Personnel situation The school currently has 5,048 full-time students, 254 faculty members, and 237 full-time teachers, of which 23.64% have senior professional titles, 66.67% have dual-qualified teachers, and 69 part-time teachers from sports industry enterprises, including skilled craftsmen, 7 world champions, 7 national champions, 6 scientific and technological experts serving the Olympic Games and the National Games, 1 winner of the National "May 1st" Labor Medal, 1 winner of the Guangdong Province "May 1st" Labor Medal, 2 national technical experts, 3 Guangdong Provincial technical experts, 3 winners of the People's Republic of China Sports Work Contribution Medal, 6 outstanding teachers in South Guangdong, and 1 outstanding educator in South Guangdong. Teaching achievements The school combines the needs of sports talents in the industry to build a professional (group) layout with a reasonable structure, prominent focus, and close connection with the industrial chain, talent chain, and innovation chain. There are 11 majors including sports training, sports protection, sports art performance, sports health care and rehabilitation, sports operation and management, social sports, leisure sports, golf sports and management, fitness guidance and management, physical training, and preschool education. There are 2 provincial-level high-level professional groups, 1 provincial-level second-class brand major, 2 provincial-level key majors, 2 provincial-level high-undergraduate collaborative education pilot majors, 5 provincial-level secondary-high vocational talent training pilot majors, 2 five-year integrated majors, and 5 1+X certificate pilot projects. A total of 3 majors ranked first among the 12 higher vocational sports majors in the country. There are 4 provincial-level high-quality online open courses. The school teachers participated in the National Higher Sports Vocational Education Teacher Skills Competition and won the first place in the group total score for four consecutive sessions; participated in the Guangdong Provincial College (Higher Vocational) Young Teachers Teaching Competition and won 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 6 third prizes; participated in the Guangdong Provincial Vocational College Skills Competition Teaching Ability Competition and won 1 first prize, 3 second prizes, and 2 third prizes; the ideological and political teaching case won the first prize of the Provincial Department of Education twice. The talent training school has established the first equestrian talent training base, the first badminton industry college, and the first southern skiing talent training base in Guangdong Province; and took the lead in establishing the Guangdong Diving Sports Association. Closely connected with the employment needs of the market, through deepening reform, the school has shown a trend of both strong enrollment and employment, and the comprehensive education effect has been greatly improved. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the enrollment scale increased by 47.6% compared with the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period. The employment rate of graduates is higher than the provincial average, and the salary of graduates has ranked among the top five in the province for many consecutive years, and the employment matching rate has steadily increased year by year. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, students participated in more than 300 sports competitions at all levels and types at home and abroad, and won 48 first prizes in international competitions, 32 first prizes in national competitions, and 162 first prizes in provincial competitions. In the vocational skills competition for higher vocational colleges in sports held by the State General Administration of Sports, the Taekwondo team won the first place in the total group score for 6 consecutive sessions, the fitness coach team won the first place in the total group score for 5 consecutive sessions, and the student group total score ranked in the top three (the only one among the national higher vocational colleges in sports). The School of Social Services has the only sports vocational skills appraisal station in the province, and the number of people appraised in sports vocational skills has been ranked first in the country for 17 consecutive years. As one of the first sports vocational colleges in the country to establish a career conversion training base for retired athletes, it has conducted 514 training courses for professional and technical personnel, referees, retired athletes, etc. in the sports industry, serving more than 53,000 people and more than 150,000 person-times. It has hosted the Guangdong Sports Vocational Skills Competition for 13 consecutive years, providing an exchange platform for high-skilled talents in the sports industry across the province. In 2020, as the only sports vocational college designated by the state to host the social guidance (fitness) project of the First Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China, it was commended by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the People's Government of Guangdong Province. In 2022, it successfully hosted the Guangdong Provincial Trials of the Fifth National Sports Industry Vocational Skills Competition. A total of 4 contestants from Guangdong Province advanced to the national finals, becoming the province with the largest number of contestants entering the finals, and won 2 first prizes (one of which was a school teacher) and 2 second prizes in the finals. The school has built the only integrated industry-university-research platform in South China that serves national fitness, promoting the effective gathering and optimal allocation of innovative elements, providing sports rehabilitation technical support for Olympic athletes such as Quan Hongchan, Fan Zhendong, and Tang Muhan; it selected bobsleigh athlete Peng Junyue and skeleton seed player Chen Wenhao for the Beijing Winter Olympics. The athletes were received and affirmed by IOC President Bach, achieving a zero breakthrough in Guangdong Province's ice and snow projects. The school actively responds to the "Belt and Road" initiative, radiates to "five countries and two regions", and has initially drafted a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the University of Nis in Serbia. It has carried out talent training with Belarus, France, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and other countries, and jointly built multiple overseas training and employment bases. It has jointly built talent training bases with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Macau Sports Federation, the Macau Athletic Federation, etc., and established a foreign exchange and cooperation model for Lingnan traditional sports projects. In recent years, the school's comprehensive educational strength has been greatly improved. It has been approved as an independent pilot unit for the construction of a "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model by the Ideological and Political Department of the Ministry of Education; selected as the first batch of "National Emergency Education Pilot Schools" of the Ministry of Education and the first batch of "Precision Recruitment Pilot Units" in Guangdong Province (one of the 11 universities); the 2022 performance appraisal result of the Party Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee's Education Working Committee for grassroots party building was "good"; won the first prize in the 2020 performance appraisal of provincial government agencies and institutions; ranked among the top three Class B higher vocational colleges in the Guangdong Province Higher Vocational Education "Innovation and Strengthening School Project" assessment for three consecutive years.
