The predecessor of the City University of Macau was the East Asia University, which was established in 1981. It was renamed in 2011 and opened a new chapter of development with "name change, restructuring, transformation and upgrading". The university has refined the characteristics of humanities, arts, business, finance, new engineering and social sciences, adhered to the path of running a metropolitan university and integrated into urban life. Adhering to the social responsibility and mission of "serving Macau and integrating into the Bay Area", following the school motto of "Virtue, erudition and practice", in the context of the integrated development of higher education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it cultivates applied and practical talents needed by Macau and the region, and continues to provide intellectual support for urban and social development. The City University of Macau currently has more than 8,500 students, with 9 colleges including the School of Business, School of Data Science, School of Finance, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Innovation and Design, School of International Tourism and Management, School of Education, School of Law, and Institute of Portuguese-speaking Countries, offering more than 40 Chinese and English courses with 11 bachelor's degrees, 17 master's degrees and 14 doctoral degrees. The university practices a multi-faceted learning model that combines "international learning", "experiential learning", "cross-cultural learning", "peer learning" and "value-added learning". At present, City University of Macau is one of the four comprehensive universities in Macau that offer "undergraduate, master's and doctoral" education at all levels. In 2020, it entered the top 100 universities in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, ranking 89th. City University continues to improve its teaching quality. "Social Sciences, General" has entered the top 1% of the world's Clarivate Analytics Essential Science Indicators (ESI), highlighting the university's characteristics and advantages in the humanities and social sciences. At the same time, City University took the lead in conducting international authoritative certification of courses. The doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree courses in tourism management are all featured courses that have obtained the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) TedQual quality education quality certification. The tourism and leisure management discipline ranks in the top 20% of universities in the world in the "2022 World Class Discipline Rankings" of Soft Science, ranking 51-75. The university currently has 16 distinctive research institutes/institutes/centers, some of which are the first or only established in Macau. The university has achieved remarkable scientific research results, and the research team continues to undertake scientific research projects commissioned by institutions including the National Natural Science Foundation, the Macau Foundation, the Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, the Talent Development Committee of the Macau SAR Government, the Macau Education and Youth Development Bureau, and the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Bureau. In order to meet the society's demand for "lifelong education and continuing education", the university has set up an International Training and Testing Center to actively explore high-quality and efficient new teaching models, optimize characteristic disciplines, and offer in-service and professional training courses that are close to social needs, in order to meet the society's demand for open education and continuing education and promote the practice of lifelong education for all. In addition, the university is also one of the bases in Macau that provides the most comprehensive international mainstream English test services, including: TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, SAT and College English Test Band 4 and 6 (CET4, CET6) and other exams. The university continues to enrich and improve its faculty and management team, and constantly recruits academic and management talents from around the world. More than 80% of its teaching staff have obtained doctoral degrees from world-renowned universities, and it has widely hired well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to teach and guide graduate students. In addition, the university has established cooperation mechanisms with more than ten international professional organizations such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and has signed cooperation agreements with dozens of well-known universities at home and abroad to open up platforms for students to carry out international learning and enhance their international vision.
