In 1909, the predecessor of Henan Polytechnic University (referred to as "Henan Polytechnic"; English: Henan Polytechnic University, English abbreviation "HPU"), Jiaozuo Road and Mining School, was born in Jiaozuo, on the bank of the Yellow River and the south of Taihang Mountain, becoming the first mining university in my country and the earliest university established in Henan Province. The school has gone through important historical periods such as Fuzhong Mining University, Private Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, National Northwest Institute of Technology, National Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, Jiaozuo Mining Institute (referred to as "Jiaozuo Mining Institute"; English: Jiaozuo Mining Institute, English abbreviation "JMI") and Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (referred to as "Jiaogong"; English: Jiaozuo Institute of Technology, English abbreviation "JIT"), and was renamed Henan Polytechnic University in 2004. It is a university jointly established by the Henan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Emergency Management, and a university in the national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". In 2020, it was selected as a university for the construction of characteristic backbone universities in Henan Province, and in 2021, it was selected as a university for the "Double First-Class" Creation Project in Henan Province. In the first half of the 20th century, many scholars, including the famous educator Cai Yuanpei, the industrial and mining master Sun Yueqi, the geologist Weng Wenhao, and Zhang Zhonglu, Zhang Qinglian, Zhang Bosheng, etc., successively taught at the school, leading the school to bear the historical responsibility of cultivating senior specialized technical personnel in the industry and mining, and made special contributions to the revitalization of national industry, national economic development and social civilization progress. The school spirit of "self-improvement and striving for progress" and the school motto of "moral responsibility" and "learning hard and practicing hard" formed through difficult times are endless and passed on from generation to generation. After the founding of New China, the school has always adhered to the socialist direction of running schools, focused on broadening the disciplines and professional fields, expanding the scale of schooling, and improving the level of schooling. It has now developed into a distinctive high-level university with the right to confer doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees, and is committed to cultivating new people of the era with social responsibility, sound personality, solid foundation, broad vision, innovative spirit, practical ability, and the ability to shoulder the great task of national rejuvenation. The university currently has three campuses: South Campus (No. 2001, Century Road, Jiaozuo City), North Campus (No. 142, Jiefang Middle Road, Jiaozuo City), and West Campus (No. 55, Jianshe West Road, Jiaozuo City), covering an area of more than 4,100 acres and a building area of more than 1.6 million square meters. It has 23 teaching colleges, Chengzheng College, International Education College, Continuing Education College (Safety Technology Training Center), and Innovation and Entrepreneurship College; 80 undergraduate majors, covering nine major disciplines of engineering, science, management, economics, law, literature, education, art, and medicine, recruiting students nationwide, with more than 41,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 6,300 graduate students. The school insists on implementing the "open development" strategy and has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions. It has cooperated with well-known foreign universities to hold 4 undergraduate education projects of the Ministry of Education for Sino-foreign cooperation, and has trained nearly 1,000 international students at multiple levels of undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees. It has established a Sino-foreign cooperative education institution-Henan Polytechnic University Limerick International College. The school provides various international exchange programs, giving full play to the geographical advantages of the birthplace of Tai Chi, creating an "International Chinese + Tai Chi" cultural exchange brand, and initially forming international characteristics. It has built 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers such as electrical and electronic engineering and engineering training centers and 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers (including projects), with a total value of 1.02 billion yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment, a total value of 2.939 billion yuan in assets on account, more than 3.78 million paper books, and more than 5.06 million electronic books, realizing the modernization of teaching and scientific research conditions. It has been approved as a national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base construction unit, and has built a national college practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base, a college student KAB entrepreneurship education base, and a Henan college student innovation and entrepreneurship practice demonstration base. It has 3 libraries and 2 affiliated hospitals. The 10G campus network has achieved full wireless coverage, and has built cloud platforms, information portals, one-stop service halls, high-performance computing platforms and other smart campus infrastructure. It has won the title of "Advanced Unit of Higher Education Informatization" by the Ministry of Education, and has been selected as a "pilot university for smart campus construction" in Henan Province and a project construction unit for "undergraduate university smart teaching demonstration school" in Henan Province. It has a large modern gymnasium with a total area of 140,000 square meters. It has hosted large-scale sports events such as CUBA and CUFA many times. It is a "National Advanced Unit for Mass Sports" named by the State General Administration of Sports; student dormitories and canteens have been rated as "demonstration student dormitories" and "demonstration student canteens" in Henan universities respectively. The school vigorously implements the "talent-strengthening school" strategy and has a strong talent team. There are 3,367 faculty and staff, including 1,320 senior professional titles and 1,468 with doctoral degrees. There are 7 academicians of the two academies (including dual appointments), 5 foreign academicians, 10 national talents, 23 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, more than 200 national teaching masters, national model teachers, national outstanding teachers, new century outstanding talents of the Ministry of Education, Zhongyuan scholars, provincial specially appointed professors, provincial outstanding experts, provincial teaching masters, etc., and 47 teaching and research innovation teams at or above the provincial and ministerial levels have been established. The school has outstanding advantages in engineering, distinctive characteristics in safety, mining, and emergency disciplines, and coordinated development of disciplines such as science, economics and management, humanities, and medicine. Seven disciplines, including engineering, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, earth science, environment and ecology, and computer science, have entered the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, of which engineering has entered 1.8‰, and materials science and chemistry have entered 5‰; two disciplines, including safety science and engineering, and surveying and mapping science and technology, have been selected into the "Double First-Class" creation project of Henan universities; the mining engineering discipline has been selected into the top 20 of the "Soft Science World-Class Disciplines"; there are 5 provincial characteristic backbone discipline groups and 23 key disciplines in Henan Province. It has built 6 postdoctoral research stations, 6 first-level doctoral programs, 27 first-level master's programs, and 22 master's professional degree authorization categories. It has the right to recommend master's degrees, and implements undergraduate-master and master-doctor joint talent training. It has been selected as one of the "National Engineering Master's Graduate Education Characteristic Engineering Fields", and has been approved as a national demonstration base for joint training of engineering graduate students. It has built 12 Henan Provincial Joint Training Bases for Graduate Students. The school is a university implementing the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education. It has been approved to build 24 national first-class undergraduate majors, 20 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, 10 national characteristic majors, 18 majors that have passed the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education, 3 national comprehensive reform pilot majors, 6 pilot majors of the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program of the Ministry of Education, 4 national teaching teams, 1 national teaching master, 30 national first-class courses and excellent courses, 5 national off-campus practical education bases for college students, and 575 national innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects for college students; it has won 120 national and provincial teaching achievement awards and has been praised by the experts of the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching review and evaluation as "a model of a university in a small city". The school strives to promote scientific and technological innovation and social services, and provide technical and intellectual support for national safety production, energy industry revitalization and regional economic and social development. Since the new era, the school has undertaken 849 national scientific research projects, including 23 major and key projects, 761 National Natural Science Foundation projects, and 65 National Social Science Foundation projects, with a total of 3.75 billion yuan in scientific research funds, and the total amount of projects in 2023 reached 671 million yuan; won 674 national and provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards, including 8 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress; 6,934 SCI papers, "three newspapers and one journal", CSSCI source journals and SSCI papers; 2,752 authorized invention patents, won 3 China Patent Excellence Awards, and held 2,977 valid patents,It ranks second among the top ten universities in Henan Province in terms of comprehensive intellectual property rights, and among the top 100 universities in China.
