Dalian Polytechnic University was founded in 1958. It is one of the four earliest light industry colleges in my country. It was originally under the Ministry of Light Industry. In 1998, it was transformed into a system jointly built by the central and local governments and mainly managed by Liaoning Province. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Dalian Polytechnic University from Dalian Institute of Light Industry. Over the past half century, the school has gradually developed into a higher education institution with engineering as the main focus, coordinated development of six major disciplines of engineering, science, art, literature, management, and economics, and the training of professional talents in food, light industry, textiles, and art as its school-running characteristics. The school currently has two postdoctoral research stations in food science and engineering and light industry technology and engineering, three first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees in food science and engineering, light industry technology and engineering, and textile science and engineering, four self-established second-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees in food machinery, food safety and quality management engineering, biomass energy and materials, and fiber composite materials, 14 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, and 8 master's professional degree authorization categories. A total of four disciplines of the school are in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, including agricultural science (0.213%), chemistry (0.636%), engineering (0.685%) and materials science (0.987%). The school's food science and engineering discipline ranked third in the country in the 2022 and 2023 Soft Science China Best Disciplines Rankings, and was rated "excellent" in the first round of "Double First-Class" construction project acceptance of Liaoning Province's universities. The "Food and Health" discipline group led by the school was approved as the "2023 Liaoning Province Higher Education Institutions Advantageous and Characteristic Discipline Group". The university has 15 colleges (departments), 42 undergraduate majors, 4 national characteristic major construction sites, 11 national first-class major construction sites, 1 national "undergraduate teaching project" local colleges and universities first batch of undergraduate major comprehensive reform pilot majors, 4 majors passed the engineering education certification of the Ministry of Education, 7 Ministry of Education "Excellence Plan" pilot majors, 13 provincial first-class major construction sites, 29 Liaoning Province first-class undergraduate education demonstration majors, 7 Liaoning Province characteristic majors, 4 Liaoning Province advantage and characteristic majors, 5 Liaoning Province transformation demonstration majors, 2 Liaoning Province key support majors, 4 Liaoning Province comprehensive reform pilot majors, 5 Liaoning Province engineering talent training model reform pilot majors, 5 Liaoning Province innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot majors. The school has the qualification to recommend outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination. There are more than 14,000 full-time undergraduate students, more than 3,300 graduate students, and more than 500 foreign students. The school currently has 1,346 faculty and staff, including 877 full-time teachers and 526 professors and associate professors. The school has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 person who won the honorary title of the Sixth National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talent, 7 people with various national talent titles, 2 people who have been awarded the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, 2 people who have been awarded the Excellent Young Scientist Fund, 26 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, and 3 people who have participated in the "Youth Talent Support Project" of the China Association for Science and Technology; nearly 100 people have been selected for provincial talent projects such as the "Xingliao Talent Plan"; 5 professional leaders in ordinary colleges and universities in Liaoning Province, 22 famous teachers in Liaoning Province, and 3 outstanding graduate student supervisors in Liaoning Province. The school has a total of 80 research platforms at or above the municipal level, including four national platforms: the National Marine Food Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Key Laboratory of Marine Food Processing and Safety Control, the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for the Development and Application of Marine Active Polysaccharides, and the National and Local Joint Engineering Laboratory for Biocatalysis Technology; the Liaoning Provincial and Ministerial Collaborative Innovation Center for Key Technologies in Deep Processing of Marine Food, the Ministry of Agriculture's Agricultural Product Processing Quality and Safety Risk Assessment Laboratory, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Deep Processing of Sea Treasures, the Shellfish Professional Branch Center for Agricultural Product Processing Technology Research and Development, the Dalian Polytechnic University Technology Transfer Center, a national technology transfer demonstration institution, the National Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Public Service Demonstration Platform, the Ministry of Science and Technology's Innovative Talent Promotion Plan Innovative Talent Training Demonstration Base, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' Key Laboratory of Aquatic Product Processing and Quality Control (co-built by the ministry and the province), and eight other research platforms of relevant ministries and commissions; it also has 34 Liaoning Provincial research platforms and 34 Dalian Municipal research platforms. The school adheres to the principle of giving equal importance to basic research and applied research. In the past five years, it has undertaken 185 national projects, including the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, and the National Art Foundation; published 5,182 research papers, including 2,874 high-quality academic papers; and applied for 951 national invention patents. In recent years, the school has won 188 national, provincial (ministerial), and municipal science and technology awards, including the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2003 and 2005, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2010, 2015, and 2018, the Science and Technology Innovation Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2008, the Dalian Science and Technology Merit Award in 2009, and the first prize of the Technical Invention Award for Outstanding Scientific Research Results of Higher Education Institutions issued by the Ministry of Education in 2021. Guided by the national strategy of serving the revitalization of the old industrial base in Northeast China, the school takes serving the development of Liaoning's "five major strategies" as the main line, promotes the construction of a regional innovation system, takes the lead in establishing the Liaoning Light Industry Textile Industry School-Enterprise Alliance, and establishes the Liaoning Higher Education Light Industry Textile Technology Research Institute to build a platform for serving regional economic and social development. The school has national, provincial, and municipal technology transfer demonstration institutions, and has established the Liaoning Dalian Nutrition and Health Food Pilot Base. With the basic positioning of serving Liaoning and facing the whole country, it actively promotes the deep integration of school and local government, school and enterprise, and promotes the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. The "Journal of Dalian Polytechnic University" sponsored by the school is a Chinese core journal and a first-level journal in Liaoning Province. It won the National University Science and Technology Journal Excellent Editor Quality Award, and has been rated as an excellent science and technology journal of Chinese universities and a characteristic science and technology journal of Chinese universities for many times. It is included in important domestic and foreign databases and retrieval institutions such as the "China Academic Journal Network Publishing Library". The school attaches great importance to the quality of talent training. In 2012, it was approved as the second batch of pilot schools for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education; in 2014, it was approved as the first batch of pilot schools for the "Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education; in 2016, it was approved as the second batch of pilot universities for transformation and development in Liaoning Province and the "College Student Engineering Training Innovation Center" industry-education integration development project planning project; in 2017, it was approved as a Liaoning Province Transformation Demonstration University and Liaoning Province Higher Education Training Base; in 2018, it was approved as the "Dalian City Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Education Base" and won the title of "National Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Characteristic Typical Experience University" issued by the China Higher Education Society. There are nearly 200 national and provincial quality courses and first-class courses, including 3 national first-class courses, 1 national quality video open course, 180 provincial first-class courses, and 13 provincial quality video open courses and provincial quality resource sharing courses. There is 1 national quality textbook, 9 provincial quality textbook awards, 8 provincial textbook construction awards, 9 excellent textbooks of the China Light Industry Federation, 11 national "12th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, 29 provincial "12th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, 13 China Light Industry "14th Five-Year Plan" textbooks, and 5 China Light Industry "14th Five-Year Plan" digital projects. In 2021, "Aquatic Product Processing Technology" edited by Academician Zhu Beiwei won the second prize of the first National Textbook Construction Award (Higher Education). The school has 1 national teaching team, 1 national "Huang Danian-style" teacher team, 5 provincial teaching teams, 2 provincial "Huang Danian-style" teacher teams, 1 provincial excellent postgraduate tutor team, 4 provincial university innovation teams, and the School of Fashion was rated as one of the top ten fashion schools in China and an advanced collective in the national education system. In 2023, the "University Engineering Training Innovation Center" was unveiled and officially put into use at the school as a construction project of the "13th Five-Year Plan for Industry-Education Integration Development Plan Project" of the National Development and Reform Commission. The center's supporting funds are 1.200 million yuan, covers an area of 8,200 square meters, with a construction area of about 20,000 square meters. It has one underground floor and five floors above ground. It is functionally divided into two major sections: the Engineering Training Center and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Center. It is responsible for the overall engineering training and innovation and entrepreneurship teaching and practice tasks of the whole school. There are more than 2,700 sets of teaching equipment worth more than 42 million yuan, and it serves more than 10,000 students annually. The school achieved excellent results in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education in 2005; in 2006, it was identified as the first batch of "Liaoning Province University Student Entrepreneurship Education Demonstration School"; in 2008, 24 students were selected as etiquette guides for the Beijing Olympic Games, which is the university with the largest number of selected students in the country. In November 2018, the school completed the undergraduate review and evaluation work. In recent years, the school has been approved to host seven provincial A-level events such as the "'Xue Chuang Cup' University Student Entrepreneurship Comprehensive Simulation Competition" and the "Liaoning Province University Student Marine Food Innovation Competition". The number of approvals in 2021 and 2022 ranked first among universities in the province. Students have achieved many outstanding results in major events such as the "Internet +" College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National and Provincial Annual Meeting of the College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, the "Challenge Cup" College Students' Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, the College Students' Computer Design Competition, the College Students' Robot Competition, the College Students' Mathematical Modeling Competition, and the College Students' Advertising Design Competition, and have won the title of excellent organizing unit many times. The school continues to promote the internationalization of education. To build the "Study in Gongda" brand, it has been approved for the Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship Project, the Chinese Government Scholarship Project, the Chinese Government Scholarship "Silk Road Project", the Chinese Government Scholarship "Business Project", the Chinese Government Scholarship "University Graduate Project" and the qualification of cultivating students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has opened 3 undergraduate majors taught in English to attract excellent students to study in China. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, 2,500 long-term and short-term international students were enrolled, and the source countries covered more than 60 countries. The proportion of degree students studying in China has increased year by year, and the student level structure has gradually become reasonable, forming a training system for undergraduate, master and doctoral students in China. In 2011, the school cooperated with the University of Southampton in the UK to organize undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs in visual communication design and clothing and apparel design. In 2019, it cooperated with Glyndwr University in the UK to organize undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs in mechanical and electronic engineering. It introduced international high-quality educational resources, promoted the school's development in talent training, discipline and professional construction, faculty team construction, scientific research, and cultivated a large number of international talents needed for service industries and local development. The school has carried out exchanges and cooperation with 112 universities in countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, France, and Japan. It has carried out inter-school exchange undergraduate "2+2" projects, undergraduate "3+1" projects, graduate "2+1" projects, graduate "1+1+1" projects, undergraduate and master's degree programs, short-term exchange student projects, and national government-sponsored study abroad projects with many internationally renowned universities such as Iowa State University in the United States, the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts Nord-Palais in France, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, and Hokuriku Institute of Technology in Japan. In the past five years, the school has been approved for 7 national high-end intellectual introduction projects and more than 20 provincial and municipal intellectual introduction projects. In 2022, the school successfully obtained approval and carried out the Ministry of Education's international industry-university-research-application cooperation and joint training graduate student program, opening up a new path for international graduate training. The school implements the International Undergraduate Academic Recognition Course Program (i.e., ISEC Program) for business administration and computer science and technology majors to cultivate outstanding professionals with international competitiveness.
