In the 1970s, there was a serious shortage of college places in Hong Kong. In 1971, Dr. Wu Hung-lit and Dr. Chung Kee-wing founded Shue Yan College on Sing Wo Road in Happy Valley with their own funds to provide further education opportunities for secondary school graduates. Shue Yan College was officially registered as a higher education college in 1976 and named Shue Yan College. On December 19, 2006, Shue Yan College was approved by the Chief Executive in Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in accordance with the Higher Education Colleges Ordinance (Chapter 320) to be renamed "Hong Kong Shue Yan University" (Shue Yan University), becoming the first private university in Hong Kong. Shue Yan University has always adhered to the spirit of the school motto "Dunren Bowu" and promoted benevolent education. While cultivating students with excellent knowledge and skills, they also become benevolent gentlemen. The goal is to train young people with ability and comprehensive and balanced development for the actual needs of different industries in Hong Kong society; to promote the humanistic spirit and freedom of learning, and to take responsibility for Hong Kong's higher education; and to set an example to embody the virtues and cultivation of the humanistic spirit. The mission is to inherit and promote traditional Chinese culture. Cultivate students' comprehensive and balanced character, and fully demonstrate their potential in social, academic and personal life; provide knowledge and thinking training to develop independent critical thinking; combine theory and professional knowledge to create suitable talents for society. The school motto "Dunren Bowu" - implies that all students will become gentlemen with both benevolence and virtue. Only when you extend yourself to others can you be a benevolent person. "Dunren" means to cultivate the spirit of a benevolent person, to be strict with oneself, to be generous and honest to others, and to achieve "if you want to establish yourself, help others to establish themselves, and if you want to achieve yourself, help others to achieve themselves". And "Broaden" means that learning should be broad and deep, and not be sloppy, so as to lay a good foundation for future academic research and serving the society.
