Northeast Petroleum University (formerly known as Northeast Petroleum College and Daqing Petroleum College) is located in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. It was founded in 1960. It is a university with engineering as its main discipline and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, education and art. In 1978, it was identified as one of the 88 national key universities. The school is a university jointly built by Heilongjiang Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. It is a university jointly built by the province and the ministry, and a first-class university in Heilongjiang Province. The school covers an area of 1.693 million square meters, of which the Qinhuangdao campus covers an area of 332,800 square meters. The Sanya Marine Oil and Gas Research Institute is located in Sanya City, Hainan Province. The school began to recruit undergraduates in 1961 and currently has 54 undergraduate majors and 22 higher vocational majors. The school focuses on the national energy strategy and has established a group of advantageous and characteristic disciplines in petroleum and petrochemicals. Formed world-leading research directions such as improving oil and gas recovery and exploration and development of continental shale oil, and formed a discipline and professional system of "advantage-led, integrated and innovative, and strong support". In 2016, engineering entered the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world, and in 2023, chemistry and earth science entered the top 1% of ESI disciplines in the world.
