Central South University is located in Changsha, Hunan Province, a famous historical and cultural city in China, covering an area of 3.17 million square meters. It straddles the two sides of the Xiangjiang River, is close to the towering Yuelu Mountain, and faces the surging Xiang River. It has an elegant environment and pleasant scenery, making it an ideal place for learning and studying. The university has 30 secondary colleges, three large-scale tertiary-level A-class comprehensive hospitals, namely Xiangya Hospital, Xiangya Second Hospital, and Xiangya Third Hospital, which are known as "Southern Xiangya", and Xiangya Stomatological Hospital. Central South University was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the former Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology. The predecessor of the former Central South University of Technology was the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, which was founded in 1952, and the predecessor of the former Changsha Railway Institute was the Central South Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, which was founded in 1953. The main disciplines of the two schools can be traced back to the mining and road sciences of the Hunan Higher Industrial School founded in 1903. The predecessor of the former Hunan Medical University was the Xiangya Medical School founded in 1914, which is one of the earliest western medicine colleges in my country. After a century of accumulation, Central South University has followed the general trend of China's higher education system reform, carried forward the university spirit with "unity of knowledge and action, practical application" as the core, and practiced the school spirit of "goodness, truth, beauty, and tolerance". It adheres to its own characteristics, serves the major needs of the country and society, unites and strives, reforms and innovates, pursues excellence, and greatly improves its comprehensive strength and overall level. The school has a complete range of disciplines, including non-ferrous metals, medicine, rail transportation and other disciplines, covering 11 major disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines, and radiates military science. The university is an independent degree authorization unit, with 40 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 48 first-level master's degree authorization points, 9 doctoral professional degree authorization points, 29 master's professional degree authorization points, 30 postdoctoral research stations, 6 first-level national key disciplines, 12 second-level national key disciplines, 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, and 61 national clinical key specialties. Five disciplines, including mathematics, materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, and transportation engineering, have been selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines; 19 disciplines, including materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, computer science, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, neuroscience and behavior, mathematics, molecular biology and genetics, general social sciences, immunology, psychiatry and psychology, earth science, environmental science and ecology, agricultural science, physics, microbiology, economics and business, have entered the top 1% of basic scientific indicators in the world, among which materials science, engineering, clinical medicine, computer science, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1/1000 in the world. The school currently has 103 undergraduate majors, including 72 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 84 national first-class undergraduate courses, and 24 national teaching achievement awards. The school took the lead in establishing an innovative senior engineering talent experimental class in China, and is one of the first pilot universities in the Ministry of Education's excellent engineer, excellent doctor, and excellent legal talent education and training program. It was selected as one of the first pilot universities in the Ministry of Education's "Strengthening Basics Plan" and a pilot university for eight-year medical education (doctoral degree in medicine). It was selected as one of the first batch of universities with typical graduate employment experience in the country, the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the national demonstration base for mass entrepreneurship and innovation, becoming one of the 10 most popular universities among my country's top 100 companies. The school insists on targeting major national and social needs, deepening collaborative innovation, and actively serving the main battlefields of national economic construction and national defense modernization. There are 31 national innovation platforms and 16 think tank research institutions selected in the China Think Tank Index Source. Since 2000, the school has won a total of 112 national science and technology awards, including 18 national science and technology first prizes (including special prizes and innovation team awards). 10 projects were selected as "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress of Chinese Universities" and selected as the first batch of national intellectual property demonstration universities. The school adheres to open education and has active international cooperation and exchanges. It is one of the first universities in the country to pass the quality certification for studying in China. It has established long-term cooperative relations with 265 universities and research institutions in 55 countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, and Russia. It has carried out extensive industry-university-research cooperation with many multinational corporate groups and initiated and participated in 13 international university alliances. It has been approved as 12 national discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases, 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, 3 projects, and 2 Confucius Institutes.
