Harbin Normal University is located in Harbin, a historical and cultural city known as the "Ice City Summer Capital". It is an important talent training base and scientific research base for education, art, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences in Heilongjiang Province. It is a high-level university that Heilongjiang Province focuses on building. The school is a national "Basic Capacity Construction Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China" university and a pilot university for the comprehensive reform of the "Three-dimensional Education" of the Ministry of Education. In December 2022, the school was selected as a domestic first-class university construction university in the "Double First-Class" construction project in Heilongjiang Province. The school was founded in 1951. Its predecessor was the East Province Special District Art School founded in 1929. In 1947, it was renamed Songjiang Provincial Xingzhi Normal School. Later, it experienced important development periods such as Harbin Normal College (1951-1956) and Harbin Normal College (1956-1980). In 1980, it was named Harbin Normal University. The school adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, adheres to the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, highlights the ideological and political guidance and teacher education characteristics, vigorously promotes the "spirit of knowing and knowing" with the core of "selfless dedication, unity of knowledge and action, pragmatic and enterprising, and education for the public", the school motto with the main purpose of "cultivating moral character and encouraging learning, and being resolute and far-sighted" and the standard of "learning as a teacher and being upright as a model". The school has been approved as one "national model department for party building work" and five "national model branches for party building work". The school has successively won the honorary titles of "Heilongjiang Province Civilized Unit Model", "National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction", "National Civilized Unit", and "National Civilized Campus". The school has three campuses in Harbin, covering an area of 1.547 million square meters, with fixed assets of nearly 3.133 billion yuan, and teaching and scientific research equipment with a total value of 4.6.2 billion yuan. It has an exhibition center with four museums in one, with the school history museum and the museum as the core. The library has a total collection of more than 12 million books and is a "national key protection unit for ancient books". The school has 25 colleges and 80 undergraduate majors, and has a number of provincial key first-level disciplines (groups) and provincial leading talent teams. The school has a complete system for awarding bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, with 9 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees and 1 professional doctoral degree authorization category; 17 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees and 15 professional master's degree authorization categories. Three disciplines, materials science, chemistry and engineering, are among the top 1% of the ESI global discipline rankings; two disciplines, materials science and engineering and chemistry, are among the top 500 in the "World Class Discipline Rankings" of the Soft Science. In the selection of the new round of "Double First-Class" construction projects in Heilongjiang Province, six disciplines, namely Marxist theory, pedagogy, Chinese language and literature, fine arts, foreign language and literature, and geography, were selected as domestic first-class discipline construction disciplines (provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines); four disciplines, namely world history, mathematics, physics, and biology, were selected as cultivation disciplines (basic disciplines), and the education professional degree authorization category was selected as a cultivation discipline (urgently needed blank disciplines). The School of Marxism is a national key school of Marxism. The school adheres to the central position of education and teaching work, focusing on the cultivation of academic talents. There are currently several national key talent training support plans, including national teaching teams, national experimental teaching demonstration centers, national virtual teaching and research office construction sites, and national talent training model innovation experimental zones. The school has been selected for the reform project of the "Excellent Teacher Training Program" of the Ministry of Education for three consecutive times, and has been approved for national and provincial new liberal arts and new agricultural research and reform practice projects, professional comprehensive reform pilot projects, and more than 100 teaching reform achievement awards. Among them, the London Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been rated as a "Global Advanced Confucius Institute" for five consecutive years and has become one of the first demonstration Confucius Institutes in the world.
