Shanxi Normal University was founded in 1958. Its predecessor was Jinnan Normal College. It was upgraded to Shanxi Normal College in 1964 and renamed Shanxi Normal University in 1984. It became a master's degree-granting institution in 1990. In 1999, Shanxi Vocational Teachers College and Shanxi Normal University Sports College (independently established) were merged. In 2006, it was added as a doctoral degree-granting institution. In 2021, it moved from Linfen to Taiyuan. Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the fine tradition of normal education and continuously deepened the reform of teacher education. It has now developed into a provincial key university with a complete range of disciplines, a complete undergraduate, master and doctoral training system, and distinctive school-running characteristics. It is an important base for the training of basic education teachers in Shanxi Province, a "double first-class" discipline construction university in Shanxi Province, a key construction university for the quality and efficiency improvement of Shanxi Province's higher education "1331 Project", and a high-level university construction university in Shanxi Province's 10 billion yuan higher education project. It has entered the Ministry of Education's teacher education collaborative quality improvement plan. It has won 3 national teaching achievement awards and 62 provincial teaching achievement awards. It has undertaken the "Excellent Teacher Training Program Reform Project" of the Ministry of Education, the National Talent Training Model Innovation Experimental Zone Project and the National College Students' Off-campus Practice Education Base Project. It has been approved for 10 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 provincial basic discipline top-notch student training base, and 8 provincial excellent (top-notch) talent training reform pilots. It is the first public-funded normal student training pilot college in Shanxi Province and the Shanxi Province "Excellent Teacher Program" normal student training college. Since its establishment, it has sent more than 400,000 outstanding talents of all levels and types to the society, and its employment rate has been ranked among the top universities in the province for many years. The school's scientific research strength has been improved year by year. In recent years, it has undertaken more than 600 national key research and development plans, 973 and 863 plans, major projects of the National Social Science Fund, key projects of the National Natural Science/Social Science Fund, general/general/youth projects and various provincial scientific research projects, with a funding of more than 300 million yuan.
