Hunan University of Technology is a comprehensive university with a 65-year history. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was renamed Hunan University of Technology from Zhuzhou Institute of Technology. In the same year, it merged with Zhuzhou Teachers College and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College. During the school's operation, Hunan Urban Construction School and Hunan Provincial Accounting School were successively incorporated. The school's history can be traced back to Zhuzhou Normal School founded in 1958. The school features packaging education. It is the first member unit accepted by the International Packaging Association (IAPRI) in my country, the director unit of the Packaging Education Committee of the China Packaging Federation, and the only vice-chairman unit of the China Packaging Federation and the China Packaging Technology Training Center among universities in the country. In 1995, as one of the first pilot institutions, the school took the lead in passing the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of the former State Education Commission. In 2003, it was approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a master's degree-granting institution. In 2008, it was rated as an excellent university in the undergraduate teaching level assessment by the Ministry of Education. In 2009, it obtained the qualification to recruit foreign students. In 2010, it passed the quality assessment of the master's degree training process with excellent results. In 2013, it was awarded the "Top 50 Universities with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment in China". At the end of 2013, it was awarded the enrollment right for the "Doctoral Talent Training Project for Serving National Special Needs". In 2014, it began to recruit doctoral students. In 2022, the school was approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a doctoral degree-granting institution, and "Materials Science and Engineering" was approved as a first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point. The school currently has two campuses, with a total area of 3,853.7 acres. The total construction area of the library is 55,430.29 square meters, with a collection of more than 2.8484 million books; the total value of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 463 million yuan, and there are 8,297 digital terminals. The school has a relatively advanced computer network service system, a standard plastic track and field stadium, a gymnasium and various sports venues that meet the needs of physical education teaching. The school has 22 teaching colleges and 1 independent college, and has established a discipline system with engineering as the main body and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, agriculture, education, and art; it has 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point and 1 postdoctoral research mobile station, 18 first-level discipline master's degree points, covering 56 second-level disciplines; 19 master's professional degree authorization categories, covering 25 degree authorization fields; 83 undergraduate majors, including 1 national teaching team and 7 provincial teaching teams; 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center and 6 provincial basic course demonstration laboratory practice teaching demonstration centers; 21 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 national professional comprehensive reform pilot, 5 national characteristic majors, 20 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 6 provincial comprehensive reform pilot majors, 7 provincial characteristic majors, and 6 provincial key majors; 14 national first-class undergraduate courses, 6 national quality (resource sharing) courses, 109 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, and 17 provincial quality courses. There are 31,464 full-time students, including 3,142 postgraduates. There are 2,820 faculty members, 1,835 full-time teachers, including 220 professors, 441 associate professors, and 552 postgraduate tutors; 1 "National Special Support Plan" teaching master, 2 "Furong Teaching Masters", 11 people enjoying "Special Allowances from the State Council and the Provincial Government", 3 Hunan "Furong Scholars", 4 "Hunan Science and Technology Innovation Leaders", 5 people who have received Hunan Outstanding Youth Fund, 20 people who have entered the provincial "121 Talent Project", 6 Huxiang Youth Talents, 1 person who has received Hunan Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 Hunan Outstanding Expert, 5 National Outstanding Teachers, 3 Provincial Teaching Masters, 7 Provincial Outstanding Postgraduate Tutors, 81 Young Backbone Teachers Training Targets of Hunan Ordinary Colleges and Universities, 9 people who have entered the ranks of provincial subject leaders, 27 teachers who have obtained the qualification of second-level professorship, and 3 academicians of the two academies. The school has materials science and engineering, a "world-class cultivation discipline" in Hunan Province, and design, a "domestic double first-class construction discipline"; four disciplines of materials science, engineering science, chemistry, biology and biochemistry are among the top 1% in the ESI global ranking; it has two national scientific research platforms, the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for "Advanced Packaging Materials R&D Technology" and the "National Packaging Advertising Research Base", 9 Hunan Key Laboratories such as "Biomedical Nanomaterials and Devices" and "Biomass Fiber Functional Materials", 2 Hunan Engineering Laboratories, 4 Hunan Engineering Research Centers, 3 Hunan Higher Education Institutions "2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers" and 47 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms such as "Product Packaging Innovation Industrial Design Center" and "Packaging Design Art and Technology Research Base"; jointly established the Hunan Engineering Technology Research Center for "New Energy-Saving Materials for Building Walls" with Hunan Fifth Engineering Co., Ltd. and Zhuzhou Xiawan Building Materials Co., Ltd.; and jointly built the "Hunan Higher Education Graduate Training Innovation Base" and "Hunan Higher Education Industry-University-Research Cooperation Demonstration Base" with high-tech enterprises such as CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd. In recent years, the school has undertaken 10 national-level teaching reform projects and 235 provincial-level teaching reform projects; won 1 national-level teaching achievement award and 41 provincial-level teaching achievement awards. 15,140 academic research papers have been published, of which 1,823 have been included in SCI, EI, and ISTP; undertaken 308 national-level scientific research projects, including 1 major project and 4 key projects of the National Social Science Fund, and 1,477 provincial-level scientific research projects; won 4 second-class national science and technology progress awards, 2 awards (1 second prize and 1 third prize) of the 8th Higher Education Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education, 13 Hunan Provincial Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards (2 first prizes), 1 first prize of Hunan Natural Science Achievements, 73 provincial-level science and technology achievement awards, and 977 patents. The project "Key Technology and Industrial Development of Complete Sets of Equipment for Special Indoor Environment Purification" led by the school won the third batch of major science and technology projects of the Provincial Science and Technology Department in 2010. "Key Energy-saving Technology and Demonstration in Cold Winter and Hot Summer Areas" was approved and funded by the National "12th Five-Year Plan" Science and Technology Support Project. The school established Dongguan Packaging College in Guangdong Province as a practical teaching base and talent service window for the school in coastal areas; the "Global Low-Carbon City Joint Research Center" jointly established with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences completed the major scientific research project of China's low-carbon city ranking through a survey of nearly 100 cities across the country, and has jointly released the "China Low-Carbon City Development Green Paper" every year since 2011; signed a comprehensive scientific and technological cooperation agreement with the Zhuzhou Municipal People's Government, and organized 11 project leaders to sign industry-university-research cooperation agreements with relevant units in Zhuzhou; established comprehensive cooperation relations with well-known domestic high-tech enterprises and national key construction areas such as Zhuzhou CRRC Times Group and Zhuzhou Qingshuitang Circular Economy Demonstration Zone; the school also hosted large-scale international academic conferences such as the "2010 Beijing International Packaging Expo·China Packaging Education Exhibition". At present, the school has established extensive scientific research cooperation and academic exchange relations with well-known foreign universities and research institutions such as the University of Arizona, State University of New York, California State University, University of Akron, University of Derby and Lincoln University, Macquarie University and University of New South Wales, Germany, University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart, Suwon University, Japan, University of Malaya, Tanzania Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Macau University of Science and Technology, and City University of Macau. The school takes "virtue and knowledge, harmony and difference" as its motto, "morality, industry, truth-seeking and innovation" as its school spirit, adheres to the school-running orientation of "based in Hunan, facing the whole country, and actively serving Hunan's new industrialization and China's packaging modernization", and strives to cultivate application-oriented senior professionals with solid foundation, broad caliber, strong ability, high quality, innovative spirit and practical ability. Over the past 60 years, the school has provided more than 210,000 high-quality professionals for the country, and a large number of outstanding alumni representatives such as Liu Zhenwu and Zhou Bohua have emerged. In the past five years, the one-time employment rate of graduates has been among the highest in the province.
