The school was founded in June 2001 and was formerly known as Zhejiang University Ningbo Institute of Technology. In January 2020, it was converted into a full-time public undergraduate university "managed by the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, organized by the Ningbo Municipal People's Government, and supported by Zhejiang University".
