It is a comprehensive general university directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and a university jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Sichuan Province, and Chengdu City. The school was formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities, which was founded in July 1950 and officially established on June 1, 1951. It was renamed Southwest University for Nationalities in April 2003.
