Hefei University is a full-time public undergraduate college jointly built by the province and the city, with the city as the main body, which was "born in reform, grew up in opening up, and developed in innovation". Its predecessor was Hefei Union University, which was founded in 1980. Mr. Yang Chengzong, the founder of radiochemistry in New China and vice president of the University of Science and Technology of China, served as the first president. At the beginning of its establishment, it implemented undergraduate enrollment. The school's "appropriate fees, no job allocation, setting up majors according to social needs, and socialized logistics" school-running model is a major initiative to lead China's higher education reform and is known as the "Xiaogang Village" of China's higher education reform. In 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it merged with Hefei Education College and Hefei Normal School to form Hefei College. In 2018, the school as a whole entered the first batch of enrollment in Anhui Province and was approved as a master's degree awarding institution. On November 30, 2023, the Ministry of Education officially agreed to rename Hefei College as Hefei University. The university adheres to the motto of "virtue, erudition, thinking and application", adheres to the school-running orientation of "local, application-oriented and international", and has won two first prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the Fourth National Education Reform and Innovation Special Award, and two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. It is known as the "vanguard" of the first echelon of China's applied undergraduate universities, and is the vice chairman unit of the National Applied Undergraduate University Special Committee, the chairman unit of the Yangtze River Delta Applied Undergraduate University Alliance, and the permanent chairman unit of the Anhui Province Applied Undergraduate University Alliance. On October 30, 2015, the prime ministers of China and Germany jointly inspected the university. Li Keqiang pointed out: "The development and growth of Hefei University over the past 30 years is a successful example of pragmatic cooperation between China and Germany." At present, the school operates on one campus, covering an area of 1,585.56 acres, with 15,512 full-time students, a total building area of 699,800 square meters, a teaching and research and administrative area of 426,600 square meters, a total value of 438 million yuan in teaching and research equipment, and 1,524,800 paper books and 1,744,300 electronic books in the library. There are 2 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 11 professional master's degree authorization points, 3 key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial levels, and 2 peak cultivation discipline construction sites. There are 1,041 full-time teachers, of which 35.8% have doctors, 46.49% have senior professional titles, and 63.2% have dual-ability. There are 20 provincial teaching teams, 24 provincial teaching masters, 4 provincial academic and technical leaders, and 155 top talents. Among the foreign teachers, 5 have won the "China Government Friendship Award", 13 have won the "Huangshan Friendship Award" of Anhui Province, 7 have attended the Spring Festival Symposium of Foreign Experts hosted by Premier Li Keqiang, and 3 of the honorary professors of the school are Nobel Prize winners. The school has established a Confucius Institute in Stralsund, Germany. German Chancellor Merkel personally unveiled the plaque and sent a congratulatory letter to the Confucius Institute for its third anniversary. As one of the first batch of signing institutions for the quality certification of higher education institutions studying in China in 2019, the school successfully passed the quality certification of higher education institutions studying in China and was awarded the "Education Service Quality Certificate". In 2021, the school signed a cooperative school-running agreement with the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, and the Sino-foreign cooperative school-running has entered a new stage from the past one-way study abroad to two-way study abroad. Together with Shanghai Open University and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, we have built a Sino-German open online learning platform to create a never-ending online learning and exchange platform. Currently, 158 courses have been launched, with a total of 320,000 students studying online. In 2022, the school became the second university in China, after Tongji University, to sign a cooperation agreement with the German Association of International Cooperation of Universities (formed by the 34 universities of applied sciences with the strongest teaching and research capabilities in Germany and Switzerland), making new breakthroughs in cooperation with Germany.
