Shanxi University of Finance and Economics is a provincial local institution of higher learning with a long history and distinctive characteristics. It is one of the earliest universities of finance and economics established after the founding of New China. It is located in Taiyuan, a national historical and cultural city known as the "Dragon City" and the capital of Shanxi Province. The school was founded in 1951. Its predecessors were the Shanxi Provincial Bank Cadre School, the Commercial Cadre School, the Supply and Marketing Cooperative Cadre School, the Finance Cadre School and the Grain Cadre School. In September 1958, the five cadre schools merged to form the Shanxi Institute of Finance and Economics. In December 1984, the Shanxi Institute of Economics and Management was established. In October 1997, the Shanxi Institute of Finance and Economics and the Shanxi Institute of Economics and Management merged to form the Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. For a long time, the school has been adhering to the school motto of "cultivating morality and establishing faith, being knowledgeable and seeking truth", adhering to the original mission of "educating people for the party and cultivating talents for the country", and has formed a discipline system with economics, management, statistics, and law as advantages and characteristics, and coordinated development of economics, management, law, science, engineering, and literature. It has trained more than 200,000 graduates for the country's economic construction and social development, and a large number of outstanding financial and economic talents have emerged. The school has 1,723 faculty and staff, including 1,158 full-time teachers, 549 professors and associate professors, 697 with doctoral degrees, and nearly 40 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, outstanding talents in the new century from the Ministry of Education, Shanxi Youth Shanxi Scholars, Shanxi Academic and Technical Leaders, and provincial-level young and middle-aged top-notch innovative talents. In recent years, the school has adhered to the concept of "precisely introducing urgently needed talents", vigorously introduced a large number of outstanding talents at home and abroad on a global scale, hired a group of famous scholars and industry elites at home and abroad as visiting professors, part-time professors and instructors, and introduced a series of talent training and support plans. The school covers an area of 1954.08 acres (including Dongshan Campus), with 16,830 undergraduates, 4,237 postgraduates, 207 doctoral students, 15,519 continuing education students, and 44 international students. The school has 22 teaching units and 22 school-level scientific research institutions. It has been approved as 5 provincial key research bases for humanities and social sciences, 1 provincial collaborative innovation center and 1 provincial key research think tank. It has 55 undergraduate majors, 5 national characteristic majors, 46 national and provincial first-class professional construction sites, 85 national and provincial first-class courses, and 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center. The school has 4 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 2 second-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and 17 master's professional degree authorization categories; it has 4 provincial key disciplines of theoretical economics, applied economics, statistics, and business administration, and 5 provincial key construction disciplines of law, Marxist theory, management science and engineering, public administration, and library information and archives management; it has 2 postdoctoral research mobile stations in applied economics and business administration. In the past five years, the university has approved 259 projects of the Ministry of Education and national projects, 1,772 provincial projects and 23 projects of Shanxi Province's "1331 Project", undertaken 544 horizontal projects, published 281 academic works, published 3,015 academic papers, won 465 scientific research awards, and was approved as the Shanxi Marxist Theory Education Base. A new "Provincial-School Cooperation Think Tank Demonstration Base" was added, and more than 890 high-level large-scale academic conferences, forums, seminars, etc. were held, which has a huge influence and reputation in the industry at home and abroad. The university insists on taking the road of open education, deepening provincial-school cooperation with 33 local governments and industry enterprises in the province, and jointly building "12 major bases", signing a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with 7 "double first-class" universities in China, and establishing exchanges and cooperation with more than 30 well-known universities and institutions abroad. Two majors of the Sino-German College of Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, a Sino-foreign cooperative institution, have reached the European FIBAA international certification standards. The school has become the fifth financial and economic college in the country and the first AACSB and AMBA member in Shanxi Province.
