Taiyuan University of Science and Technology is the first heavy machinery undergraduate institution in New China. It is a multidisciplinary university with distinctive educational characteristics. In 1952, the school's predecessor, Shanxi Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, was founded. In 1953, the school was placed under the Central Government’s First Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1955, the forging majors of Changchun Automobile School and Hankou Machinery Manufacturing School were merged. In 1960, it was renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. In 1965, the hoisting and conveying machinery majors of Dalian Institute of Technology and Shenyang Mechanical and Electrical College were merged.
