Taizhou University is a comprehensive general university approved by the Ministry of Education. It implements a provincial and municipal co-management system with the city as the main school. The origin of the school can be traced back to the simple normal department of Santai Middle School established in 1907. Higher education was started in 1958. In 1978, the State Council approved the establishment of Taizhou Normal College. It was upgraded to an undergraduate school in 2002. In 2008, it passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education with 17A2B scores. In 2018, it passed the undergraduate teaching work review and evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it was selected as a provincial application-oriented construction pilot demonstration school. In 2020, it entered the top ten of the Chinese applied university rankings. In 2021, it was approved as a master's degree awarding institution and appointed Professor Chen Shiyi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as honorary president. The school has been embracing many cultures in its development history. Between 1995 and 2007, the former Taizhou Teachers’ Training College, Linhai Normal School, Taizhou Health School and Wenling Normal School were successively incorporated into the school. The school has been awarded the titles of National Advanced Collective for Language and Writing Work, National Model Unit for Greening, National Demonstration Unit for Energy-Saving Public Institutions, National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee, Provincial Civilized Unit, Provincial Advanced Health Unit, Provincial “Thousand Villages Demonstration, Ten Thousand Villages Renovation” Project and Beautiful Zhejiang Construction Outstanding Contribution Collective, Provincial Green School, Provincial 4A-level Safe Campus, and Provincial Ideological and Political Work Innovation Unit. The university is divided into three campuses in Jiaojiang and Linhai, covering a total area of nearly 1,600 acres and a building area of about 620,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 490 million yuan, and the library has more than 2.4 million paper books. It has 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 wholly-owned enterprises, and 2 affiliated schools (kindergartens). The school has good conditions for running schools and beautiful campus scenery. It has 14 secondary colleges, including the School of Humanities, the School of Business (Taizhou Small and Micro Finance College), the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Electronic and Information Engineering (Big Data), the School of Life Sciences, the School of Pharmaceutical and Chemical Engineering, the School of Art and Design, the School of Teacher Education (Physical Education), the School of Intelligent Manufacturing (Aerospace Engineering), the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Medicine, the School of Marxism, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the School of Pharmacy. There are more than 16,000 full-time students, of which the Jiaojiang campus focuses on engineering, economics, management, medicine, and art, with more than 11,000 students, and the Linhai campus focuses on liberal arts and teacher education, with more than 5,000 students. There are 55 undergraduate majors, nearly 50% of which are engineering majors. There are 2 national specialty majors, 3 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 11 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 10 majors have passed national certification, and 9 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 8 provincial talent training bases have been approved.
