Shanghai Dianji University is a general college of higher learning oriented to advanced manufacturing and modern service industries, with engineering as the main discipline, and coordinated development of economics, management, literature, art, science and other disciplines. The predecessor of the school was Shanghai Electric Manufacturing School, which was established in 1953. It has undergone the development and evolution of Shanghai Electric Manufacturing School, Shanghai Electric Manufacturing Technology College, and Shanghai Electric Technology College. In 1985, the school was among the first batch of pilot five-year technical college education in the country, and in 2002 it was listed as a national key construction higher vocational college. In 2004, Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry School and Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Industry Staff University were merged into the school; in September of the same year, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the school was renamed Shanghai Dianji University and upgraded to a full-time general undergraduate college. In 2011, the school was listed as a pilot unit for professional degree graduate students in the "Talent Training Project for Special Needs of the Country" by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and began postgraduate education. In 2020, the school was approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee as a master's degree awarding unit. The school currently has 13,400 full-time students, including more than 11,000 undergraduate students; the employment rate of graduates has remained above 96% for consecutive years, and the quality of talent training enjoys a good social reputation. The school has successively become the first batch of CDIO pilot colleges in the country and the first batch of Shanghai Demonstration Colleges for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, and has won the honorary titles of "National Advanced Vocational Education Unit", "National May 1st Labor Award", "National Skilled Talent Cultivation Outstanding Contribution Award", "Shanghai Advanced Collective for Promoting Employment", "Shanghai Civilized Unit", and "Shanghai Demonstration School for Rule of Law". There are 15 secondary teaching units, including the National Engineering Practice Education Center, Shanghai Engineering Technology Research Center, and Shanghai Training Base for the World Skills Competition. The school's philosophy is to adhere to the "technology-based school, application-oriented" school-running strategy, adhere to the characteristic development path of industry-education integration, actively cultivate excellent field engineers for Shanghai and Lingang New Area industries, and strive to build a national demonstration university of applied technology. The talent training orientation of the school is: adhering to the fundamental purpose of moral education, adhering to the educational concept of "trinity" of value shaping, ability training and knowledge imparting, and committed to cultivating excellent field engineers who love the party and serve the country, are dedicated to their work, have solid professional basic knowledge, have strong engineering practice and innovation ability, are good at solving complex engineering and technical problems, have international vision and teamwork ability, and are rooted in engineering practice and production. The school insists on unremitting education and teaching reforms and continuously improves the quality of talent training. Together with China Chongran, Shanghai Electric, Lingang Group and other companies, it has jointly built the Lingang New Area Intelligent Manufacturing Industry College, Lingang Mingge New Motor and Electronic Control Industry College, and Shanghai Electric Li Bin Technician College. It has 44 undergraduate majors, including 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 17 Shanghai municipal, 2 national college characteristic major construction sites, 3 majors of the Ministry of Education's "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", 11 Shanghai applied undergraduate pilot majors, and 1 Shanghai demonstrative all-English major. 6 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification, and 3 majors have passed the new liberal arts education professional certification. The school adheres to the discipline-led approach and continuously enhances the core innovation of scientific research. There are 11 key disciplines of various levels and types. "Material Science and Engineering" is a Class IV peak discipline in Shanghai, "Mechanical Engineering" is a Class II plateau discipline in Shanghai, "Electrical Engineering" is a first-class discipline monitoring and construction discipline in Shanghai, and "Power Electronics and Power Transmission" and "Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation" are key construction disciplines of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. The school is committed to building an applied technology faculty team, with a group of high-level talents such as national candidates for the Hundred Million Engineering, National Outstanding Youth, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, and Shanghai leading talents. There are 1,053 faculty members, including 853 full-time teachers, more than 48.07% of whom have doctors, and 44.43% of dual-qualified teachers. The school adheres to the principle of opening up and actively introduces international high-quality educational resources. It has been approved as a Sino-foreign cooperative school-running institution of "Shanghai Institute of Electric Power Kaiserslautern Intelligent Manufacturing College". It has established cooperative relations with 93 universities in 29 countries (regions), and cooperated with nearly 30 universities to carry out credit recognition exchanges. In recent years, more than 1,350 students have been selected to study abroad. The school actively serves the country's "Belt and Road" initiative, actively carries out educational cooperation and exchanges with universities along the route, and offers 4 fully English-taught majors such as automation and international economics and trade undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. Every year, it receives more than 300 international students from more than 30 countries and regions around the world to study for degrees, short-term exchanges and language training.
