Shanghai University of Science and Technology (Chinese abbreviation: Shanghai University of Science and Technology, full English name: ShanghaiTech University, English abbreviation: ShanghaiTech) is a full-time general higher education institution jointly organized and constructed by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The strategic concept of establishing Shanghai University of Science and Technology began in 2003. In order to better serve the national development strategy, based on the idea of "integration of science and education", the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Chinese Academy of Sciences began to plan to jointly build a research university in Pudong. In May 2011, both parties decided to jointly establish a leading group and working group for the establishment of ShanghaiTech University to comprehensively promote the construction of ShanghaiTech University. On September 30, 2013, the Ministry of Education officially approved the establishment of ShanghaiTech University. Shanghai University of Science and Technology is located in Zhangjiang High-tech Park, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. It is an important part of the Zhangjiang Comprehensive National Science Center under construction. It is closely connected with national scientific research institutions such as Zhangjiang Laboratory, Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Source, and National Protein Research (Shanghai) Facility. Integrated with large scientific facilities. The campus covers an area of about 900 acres, with a total construction area of about 700,000 square meters. The campus construction fully embodies the planning and design concept of "student-teacher-oriented, integration of teaching and scientific research, green, environmentally friendly and intelligent". As of December 2023, the total number of students is 6,041, including 1,871 undergraduates, 2,791 master's students (including National University of Science and Technology), and 1,379 doctoral students (including National University of Science and Technology). The total number of faculty members is 1,522, including 376 teachers in the permanent and teaching professor series, and 288 teachers in the distinguished professor series. The school's disciplines and majors are based on the positioning of running a school and proactively serve the national strategy and economic and social development needs. It consists of 19 colleges, academies, research institutes, and scientific research centers. There are currently 5 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 8 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 2 professional doctoral degree categories, and 3 professional master's degree categories. There are 12 majors for undergraduate enrollment, covering physics, chemistry, materials, biology, information, management, creativity and art, mathematics, history, etc. The school focuses on cultivating students' sense of social responsibility to "determine, become talented, serve the country, and enrich the people", and cultivate top talents engaged in scientific discovery, high-tech innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging industries. Undergraduate training follows the principles of “wide caliber, solid foundation, small scale, and internationalization” and highlights general education, professional education, and innovation and entrepreneurship education. Postgraduate training focuses on combining major scientific facilities, major scientific research projects and key industries, and cultivating talents urgently needed for national strategies based on the school's positioning and characteristics. The school serves the national innovation-driven development strategy, aims at the frontier areas of basic research, promotes the intersection of disciplines and the integration of science and education, and actively deploys in major innovation fields such as photonic science, artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and energy science, and has achieved a number of major original results. As of December 2023, more than 26 first-author papers have been published in the journals "Science", "Nature" and "Cell". The transformation of scientific and technological achievements has achieved remarkable results. In recent years, the amount of patent licensing contracts has ranked among the top universities in the country. In 2023, the school will be approved as a new key laboratory of the Ministry of Education for "Intelligent Perception and Human-Computer Collaboration". As one of the supporting units, it will be approved to build a new national key laboratory for "Advanced Medical Materials and Medical Devices". "Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility" is open to users around the world. The construction of the "Shanghai Hard X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility", the country's largest scientific facility project with the largest investment at present, is progressing smoothly. In 2022, a new national major scientific and technological infrastructure pre-research project was approved. Relying on these large scientific facilities and taking into account the opportunities of the “double first-class” construction, Shanghai University of Science and Technology will significantly enhance its innovation capabilities in serving the national development strategy. As a pilot unit for comprehensive education reform, ShanghaiTech University will strive to build an innovative platform integrating industry, academia and research, with student training as the first priority, first-class teachers as the first resource for development, reform and innovation as the first driving force for progress, and the integration of science and education.
