Jiangsu Second Normal University is a provincial general undergraduate school with teacher education as its main body and training of primary and preschool teachers as its focus. Its predecessor, Jiangsu Education College, was founded in 1952 and was one of the 17 public undergraduate schools in Jiangsu Province in the early days of the founding of New China. In 1959, the school took the lead in offering general undergraduate education among provincial education colleges across the country. In 2013, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was converted into a general undergraduate school and renamed Jiangsu Second Normal University. Over the past 70 years, the school's teachers and students have devoted themselves to teaching and serving the country, forming a fine tradition of "perseverance, self-improvement, strengthening teachers and promoting education, and loyalty and responsibility", interpreting the connotation of the school motto of "respecting morality, devoting oneself to work, seeking truth and innovation", continuing the teacher spirit of "being a teacher with high learning and being a model of integrity", and making contributions to the party's education cause. The school currently has two campuses, Shiqiu and Caochangmen, covering an area of 718,700 square meters, with 15 secondary colleges and about 13,000 full-time undergraduate students. The ratio of full-time teachers with senior professional qualifications and doctoral degrees is more than 40%, including 60 young talents in the propaganda and ideological and cultural work of the Central Propaganda Department, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, national inspectors, provincial inspectors, provincial ideological and political "leading and sailing" talents, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, and provincial "333 Project" training targets. The school has distinctive characteristics in teacher education, with about 68% of the students in normal schools. It is a national-level excellent teacher training program reform project undertaking colleges and universities, a national-level primary and secondary school backbone teacher and backbone principal training base, a pilot training base for primary and secondary school principals of the Ministry of Education, and the only teacher education reform experimental base in Jiangsu Province. The Jiangsu Provincial Teacher Training Center, the Education Administrative Cadre Training Center, and the Teacher Qualification Certification Guidance Center are all located in the school. The school currently has 36 undergraduate majors, including 17 normal majors; it has 5 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 16 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 1 brand major, 3 key majors, and 6 characteristic majors. There are 4 key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, 3 provincial teaching teams, 2 key research bases for philosophy and social sciences in colleges and universities, and 2 outstanding innovation teams. There is a provincial engineering research center, and it has the only key think tank in the province's education field. There are 5 national first-class undergraduate courses, 14 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 3 experimental teaching and practical education centers, 19 key textbooks, and 11 provincial online open courses. In recent years, it has won 2 first prizes and 4 second prizes in national teaching achievement awards, 5 special prizes, 1 first prize, and 2 second prizes in provincial teaching achievement awards. In the past three years, students have won more than 900 awards in various disciplines and cultural and sports competitions at the provincial and ministerial levels or above, including 2 special prizes in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition; won 104 awards in the Jiangsu Province Normal Students Basic Skills Competition, and the total number of awards ranks among the top in similar schools in the province. The school adheres to the principle of open education, and has established good cooperative relations with more than 40 universities and research institutes in more than 10 countries (regions). It has established academician workstations, Russian Cultural Center, Spanish Cultural Center and cross-strait opera and Chinese studies inheritance exchange bases, and has been approved as a national research center by the Ministry of Education. More than 300 off-campus internship, practice and training bases have been jointly established with primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, industries, enterprises (institutions) and research institutes inside and outside the province. Standing at a new historical starting point, the school will adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, thoroughly study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, carry forward and practice the spirit of educators, bravely undertake the mission of teacher education, forge ahead, and move forward courageously towards the goal of building a high-level teaching and research-oriented normal university with important influence in China and more distinctive characteristics of teacher education.
