One of the starting points of higher agricultural education in China. The predecessor of the school was the Hubei Agricultural School founded by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang in 1898 during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. After several changes, in 1952, all departments of Wuhan University Agricultural College and Hubei Agricultural College and some departments of agricultural colleges of six comprehensive universities such as Sun Yat-sen University were established to form Huazhong Agricultural College. In 1979, it was approved by the State Council to be listed as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1985, it was renamed Huazhong Agricultural University. In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it entered the ranks of the national "211 Project". In 2017, it was included in the ranks of the national "Double First-Class" construction. The leaders of the Party and the country have shown their cordial care. Dong Biwu, Li Xiannian and others have successively written inscriptions and inscribed the school name for the school. In 1998, Jiang Zemin, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of the People's Republic of China, wrote a personal inscription for the school's centenary celebration. In 2011, Hu Jintao, then General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, listened to our school's report on the bio-industry. In 2013, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, wrote back to our school's "Benyu Volunteer Service Team" and put forward the earnest exhortation of "walking with the motherland and dedicating to the people". The campus environment is unique. The campus is located in the main urban area of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, with Lion Mountain and surrounded by lakes on three sides. It has a 5-square-kilometer mountain and water campus, 9 kilometers of romantic lakeshore, 10 kilometers of "Forest Road", and 6.6 kilometers of lake light greenway. The environment is elegant and the scenery is beautiful. The campus style with a blend of landscape, culture, and emotions is fascinating. The disciplines have obvious advantages and characteristics. In the first round of "Double First-Class" effectiveness evaluation, 7 of the 9 evaluation indicators of the school's overall construction were ranked first. Five disciplines, including biology, horticulture, animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, and agricultural and forestry economic management, were once again selected for the second round of national "Double First-Class" construction disciplines. 7 disciplines entered Class A disciplines. According to the statistics of the Basic Science Indicators (ESI) database of the American Information Technology Institute, 13 disciplines of our university are in the top 1% of ESI, and 2 disciplines are in the top 1‰, distributed in 6 categories, including agronomy, life sciences, science, engineering, medicine, and social sciences. Among them, the disciplines in the top 1% (botany and zoology, agricultural sciences, biology and biochemistry, environmental science/ecology, microbiology, molecular biology and genetics) have achieved full coverage of the two categories of agronomy and life sciences; the disciplines in the top 1‰ (botany and zoology, agricultural sciences) have achieved full coverage of the agronomy category. The education system is complete. There are 17 colleges (departments), 64 undergraduate majors, 27 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 16 master's professional degree authorization categories, 15 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 4 doctoral professional degree authorization categories, and 15 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 32,982 full-time students, including 19,022 undergraduates, 10,566 master students, 3,394 doctoral students, and 456 international students. There are many talented people. There are 3,010 faculty members, including 1,704 teachers, 555 professors, and 329 postdoctoral fellows. There are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of the American Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Third World Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 32 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 32 winners of the National Excellent Youth Fund, 1 chief scientist of the modern agricultural industry technology system, and 59 post scientists. There are 6 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Groups and 84 provincial and ministerial excellent innovation teams. There are 4 national teaching masters and 7 national teaching teams. The education and teaching reform has been fruitful. A total of 30 national teaching achievement awards have been won, including 1 special prize, 4 first prizes, and 25 second prizes. It has been approved for one national education system reform project, one of the first batch of national basic disciplines top students training program 2.0 bases, six national new agricultural research and reform practice projects, five national new engineering research and practice projects, four national new liberal arts research and reform practice projects, 31 national first-class professional construction sites, two national professional comprehensive reform pilot majors, two national "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" majors, eight national "Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program" majors, and 58 national first-class undergraduate courses. It has built four national experimental teaching demonstration centers, six agricultural science and education cooperation talent training bases of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture, and 11 national off-campus practice bases for college students. It has strong scientific and technological strength. There are currently three national key laboratories, three national engineering (technology) research centers, one national biological breeding industry-education integration innovation platform, and one frontier science center of the Ministry of Education. There are 14 international science and technology cooperation bases, 31 ministerial and provincial key (engineering) laboratories, 44 ministerial and provincial research and development centers, 7 higher education discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases ("111" plan), and 4 provincial key research bases for humanities and social sciences. In the past five years, 7,019 scientific research projects have been approved with a funding of 4.91 billion yuan. In the research fields of hybrid rapeseed, green super rice, high-quality breeding pigs, animal vaccines, high-quality citrus, test tube seed potatoes, cotton, corn, freshwater fish, etc., a number of landmark achievements have been achieved that are well-known at home and abroad. Excellent achievements in spiritual civilization construction. Since 1996, the school has been rated as the best civilized unit in Hubei Province for ten consecutive times, and won the title of advanced unit for spiritual civilization construction in the country in 2005. It has been rated as a national civilized unit since 2008. In 2017, it was rated as the first national civilized campus, and in 2020 it was awarded this honorary title again. Development vision: By the middle of this century, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the school, the school will be built into a world-class university with distinctive characteristics.
