China University of Petroleum (Beijing), formerly known as Beijing Petroleum Institute, was founded in 1953. It was based on the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Petroleum Engineering of Tsinghua University, and brought together some teachers from Tianjin University and Peking University. It is the first petroleum university in New China, laying the foundation for the exploration and development of petroleum higher education in my country. The university is located in two places. The Beijing campus is located in the scenic southern foot of Jundu Mountain in Changping District, Beijing, covering an area of more than 700 acres; the Karamay campus is located in Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, known as the "City of Oil", covering an area of more than 7,000 acres. Since its establishment, the university has been a leading university in the industry that is key to national construction. In the 1960s, the university became one of the 64 key universities in the country; since the restoration of the degree system in the 1980s, it has been one of the first universities to obtain the right to confer master's degrees; since the 1990s, it has successively entered the ranks of universities in the national "211 Project" and "Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" project construction; in 2017, it entered the ranks of national "Double First-Class" construction universities. The university has always insisted on running a university rooted in China, and has made important contributions to the development of my country's petroleum and petrochemical industry and the construction of an energy power. Since its establishment, it has trained more than 300,000 outstanding professionals for the country and is known as the "cradle of petroleum talents". In July 2020 and May 2023, General Secretary Xi Jinping wrote back to the graduates of the Karamay campus and the Central Asian international students, reflecting the full affirmation of the school's pursuit, achievements and contributions. The disciplines are distinctive and strong. The school adheres to the discipline construction idea of "strengthening excellence, innovation, and creating first-class", builds a discipline system with distinctive energy characteristics, and forms a discipline ecology with first-class disciplines leading and backbone disciplines and basic disciplines developing in a coordinated manner. There are currently 2 national "double first-class" disciplines and 2 Beijing high-tech disciplines. It has formed obvious advantages in disciplines such as oil and gas science and engineering, and actively deployed clean and low-carbon intelligent discipline groups in the fields of carbon neutral engineering and technology, oil and gas artificial intelligence, etc. The ESI ranking of 8 disciplines in engineering, chemistry, earth science, materials science, computer science, environment and ecology, general social science, and mathematics is in the top 1% in the world, among which engineering, chemistry, and earth science are in the top 1‰. The school integrates industry and education and educates people in an all-round way. The school currently has more than 15,000 full-time undergraduate students (including more than 6,000 in Karamay Campus), more than 7,200 master's students, more than 2,100 doctoral students, and more than 650 degree-granting international students. The school adheres to the principle of moral education and has built a large education system for comprehensive cultivation of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. There are 21 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 20 provincial and ministerial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 5 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national virtual teaching and research room construction pilots. It has created a first-class discipline competition group in the energy field represented by the China Petroleum Engineering Design Competition, and pioneered the national science and technology innovation competition in the oil and gas field. It has been selected as the "National Demonstration Base for the Training of Innovative Talents" of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National College Practice Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base of the Ministry of Education. Relying on the advantages of industry-university-research cooperation in running schools, the university has formed a model of cultivating top-notch innovative talents with distinctive industry characteristics and high-level professional talents with full-sequence industry-education integration. It is one of the first batch of pilot universities for comprehensive reform of professional degree graduate education in the country, the first batch of national engineering master and doctoral training reform pilot universities, and the first national excellent engineer college construction university in the energy field. Three bases have been rated as national industry-education integration demonstration bases. The research advantages in the field of oil and gas are outstanding, and major achievements have been continuously produced in the fields of unconventional, deep water, deep ground, clean energy, and pipeline safety. Rapid development has been achieved in emerging research fields such as oil and gas intelligence, hydrogen energy, energy storage, and CCUS, and it has been selected as a national energy storage technology industry-education integration innovation platform. During the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period, the school won 18 national science and technology awards, including 6 second prizes of the National Technological Invention Award as the first completing unit, ranking 8th among universities in the country.
