In July 1958, in order to speed up the construction of Anhui and change the situation of lack of medical care and medicine for the people in northern Anhui, the state decided to establish Bengbu Medical College with the assistance of the former Shanghai Second Medical College (now Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine) and Anhui Medical College (now Anhui Medical University). The school is one of the first pilot universities for the National Excellent Physician Education and Training Program, one of the first standardized training bases for specialist physicians in the country, a national-level innovation and entrepreneurship practice base for college students, a national-level off-campus practice education base for college students, and a pilot university for the "5+3" reform of clinical medicine of the Ministry of Education. The school is one of the first national institutions with the right to confer bachelor's and master's degrees, a university recommended by the Ministry of Education for master's degree candidates, a joint training unit for doctoral students of the Army Medical University and Jinan University, a project construction unit for the conferment of doctoral degrees in Anhui Province, and a postdoctoral position setting unit in Anhui Province.
