Kashgar University is located in Kashgar, a famous historical and cultural city in China, an excellent tourist city in China, and known as "five ports connecting eight countries and one road connecting Europe and Asia". It is a modern applied university with a long history of education, a complete range of disciplines and distinctive characteristics in the westernmost part of the motherland. The school was founded in 1962. Its predecessor was Kashgar Teachers College. From its establishment to 1978, it was the only higher normal college among the five higher education institutions in the autonomous region (Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Institute of Technology, Bayi Agricultural College, Xinjiang Medical College, Xinjiang Kashgar Teachers College). It played an irreplaceable and important role in basic education, social stability and economic development in Xinjiang, especially in southern Xinjiang. In 1978, it was upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Kashgar Teachers College. In 2003, it obtained the qualification of a master's degree-granting institution. In 2007, it achieved excellent results in the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2012, it was listed as a college of basic capacity building project for colleges and universities in central and western China. In April 2015, it was renamed Kashgar University. In June 2016, it was identified as one of the 100 pilot universities for transformation and development in the country. In 1994 and 2009, it was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective for National Unity and Progress" by the State Council twice; in 2014, the Chinese Language Department was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective for National Unity and Progress" by the State Council; in 2022, it was rated as "Autonomous Region National Unity and Progress Demonstration School". The school currently has 22 teaching units and 66 undergraduate majors, covering 11 disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and agriculture. There are 5 first-level master's degree authorization points and 7 professional master's degree authorization points. The master's degree authorization disciplines cover 6 major categories: economics, law, education, literature, science and engineering. There are 32,000 students and 1,981 faculty and staff. It has three campuses in Gaotai, Xinquan and Dongcheng, covering an area of 3,350 acres. The library has a total area of 63,000 square meters, with a collection of 1.509 million books and 1.78 million electronic books. Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the university spirit of "toughness like poplar trees and dedication like red candles", condensed the school motto of "harmony, tolerance, inspiration and strength", and cultivated more than 120,000 specialized talents of various types.
