Tianjin Medical University, formerly known as Tianjin Medical College, was founded in 1951. It is a higher medical school approved by the former State Council after the founding of New China. Professor Zhu Xianyi, a famous endocrinologist and medical educator, was the first president. In June 1994, Tianjin Medical College and Tianjin Second Medical College were formally established as Tianjin Medical University. In December 1996, it became the only municipal college in Tianjin that was key to the national "211 Project". In October 2015, it became a university jointly built by the Tianjin Municipal People's Government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education. In September 2017, it was selected as a national "world-class discipline" construction university. In February 2022, it became a second round of "double first-class" construction university. Tianjin Medical University is actively engaged in my country's medical higher education. It is one of the first two medical schools approved by the country to pilot an eight-year system, and one of the first 15 colleges to pilot a seven-year system. The school currently has two campuses on Meteorological Observatory Road and Guangdong Road and 7 university hospitals. There are 21 undergraduate majors, 19 colleges (departments) and 1 independent college. There are 11,659 full-time undergraduate students or above, including 5,522 undergraduates, 4,141 master's students, 1,206 doctoral students, and 790 international students. Including the university hospital, the school currently has 8,566 professional and technical personnel of various types, including 749 senior and 1,536 associate senior. There are 143 national talents, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 1 foreign academician; 14 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund and 11 winners of the Excellent Youth Science Fund; 8 leading talents and 7 young top talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", 15 Yangtze River Scholars of the Ministry of Education, and 15 candidates of the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project; 4 chief scientists of the "973" of the Ministry of Science and Technology; 17 experts with outstanding contributions from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; 15 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions from the National Health Commission, and 18 people in the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education. In 2002 and 2008, the school passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching and seven-year higher medical education teaching work by the Ministry of Education with excellent results. In 2012, 2013 and 2014, it passed the certification of nursing, stomatology and clinical medicine by the Ministry of Education respectively. In 1997, the school formally established the International Medical College, the education management department for international students in China. The source of international students comes from 105 countries. The scale and quality of international student education are among the best in the country's medical schools. There are currently 8 national-level English-taught brand courses for international students in China, 25 English-taught brand courses for international students in Tianjin, and "Establishment and Practice of Full English Teaching and Quality Assurance System for Clinical Medicine Majors for International Students in China" won the first prize of national teaching achievements. After the Ministry of Education's first English Teacher Training Center for International Students in China (Medicine) was established in the school in 2010, it has provided training for nearly 1,500 teachers from 54 universities across the country. There are currently 10 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 2 doctoral professional degree authorization points; 12 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points and 6 master's professional degree authorization points. There are 6 postdoctoral mobile stations. There are 514 doctoral supervisors and 1,681 master's supervisors. There are 5 national key disciplines, 18 Tianjin key disciplines, 3 Tianjin top disciplines, and 6 Tianjin universities' characteristic disciplines (groups) serving the industry; 9 disciplines are ranked in the top 1% of the global Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, among which clinical medicine is ranked in the top 1‰ of the ESI global ranking; 2 national key laboratories, 29 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and 16 research institutes have been jointly established and approved. The Tianjin Collaborative Innovation Center for Medical Epigenetics has been approved as a provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center. There is 1 international science and technology cooperation base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 14 international science and technology cooperation bases of Tianjin, 1 innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, which have received rolling support. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university has undertaken 3,180 provincial and ministerial-level vertical projects with a total funding of more than 1.6 billion yuan. It has won 144 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards, including 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 7 outstanding scientific research achievements of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, 1 Ho Leung Ho Lee Award, 1 Tianjin Science and Technology Major Achievement Award, 1 Tianjin International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, 4 special prizes and 24 first prizes of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress Award, and 2 first prizes of Tianjin Natural Science Award. In 2016, the university was approved as a "Demonstration Base for Innovative Talent Training" by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The school has established academic exchanges and cooperation relations with 98 universities and research institutions in 26 countries and regions, carried out high-level international cooperation in the fields of medicine and biomedicine, hired 162 world-renowned medical experts and professors as honorary professors and visiting professors of various disciplines of the school, and established a "Foreign Expert Advisory Committee" to promote the international development of the school. The school takes medical science as its core and life science as its support.
