Xi'an Institute of Physical Education was founded in 1954. It was originally named Northwest Institute of Physical Education and was renamed Xi'an Institute of Physical Education in 1956. It is one of the six earliest sports colleges established in New China. It was originally directly under the State General Administration of Sports (State Sports Commission). Since 2001, it has been jointly built by the central and local governments. It is a college jointly built by the State General Administration of Sports and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. It is a "domestic first-class discipline" construction university in Shaanxi Province, and Shaanxi Province plans to add a doctoral degree authorization unit to establish a project construction unit. The school currently has two campuses in Hanguang and Huyi, covering an area of more than 1,200 acres. There are currently 8,565 undergraduate students and 1,344 master's students. The school has 9 colleges: School of Physical Education, School of Sports Training, School of Sports and Leisure, School of Wushu, School of Sports and Health Sciences, School of Sports Economics and Management, School of Arts, School of Sports News and Media, and School of Football; there are also School of Marxism, Graduate Department, School of Continuing Education, and Affiliated Competitive Sports School. The academic education covers a comprehensive and three-dimensional level. In addition, the university also has two co-constructed colleges (schools): China Race Walking School (co-constructed with the Track and Field Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China); China Bowling College (co-constructed with the Small Ball Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China). The school has 2 first-level disciplines and 10 second-level disciplines for master's degree awarding, among which sports science is a first-class construction discipline in Shaanxi Province. Cooperate with Shanghai Institute of Physical Education to train doctoral students. There are 21 undergraduate majors, covering 7 disciplines including liberal arts, science, economics, management, education, medicine, and art. Sports education, sports training, sports economics and management majors are national "first-class majors" construction points, and 7 majors such as martial arts and traditional national sports, sports rehabilitation, etc. are provincial "first-class majors" construction points; the "Sports News Photography" course was shortlisted as the first batch of national online and offline hybrid first-class undergraduate courses, and 16 courses such as "Gymnastics" were selected as provincial first-class undergraduate courses. The school has established inter-school cooperation with 63 universities and research institutions in 29 countries and regions. Since its establishment, the university has trained more than 60,000 sports teachers, coaches, athletes and professionals in sports research, sports news, sports business and management for the country. The library is the sports science literature and information center in the Northwest region, with a total collection of more than 830,000 books.
