The National University of Defense Technology, formerly known as the Military Engineering College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in Harbin in 1953, namely the famous "Harbin Military Engineering". General Chen Geng served as the first president and political commissar. "Harbin Military Engineering" was founded during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea. It is the first higher military engineering college in New China. Its outstanding educational achievements have created a monument in the history of national defense science and technology and higher education in my country. In 1970, the main body of the college moved south to Changsha and was renamed Changsha Institute of Technology. In 1978, it was rebuilt into the National University of Defense Technology of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. In 1999, Changsha Artillery Academy, Changsha Engineering Corps Academy and Changsha Political College were merged into the National University of Defense Technology. In 2017, the Central Military Commission decided to rebuild the National University of Defense Technology based on the National University of Defense Technology, the School of International Relations, the National Defense Information College, the Xi'an Communication College, the School of Electronic Engineering, and the School of Meteorology and Oceanography of the University of Science and Technology, and to include the 63rd Institute of the Equipment Development Department of the Military Commission, and to be under the leadership of the Military Commission. The construction and development of the school has always received the cordial care of the Party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission. When the Military Engineering College was founded, Chairman Mao Zedong personally issued the "Instructions" to the college and named the journal "Engineering". In 1978, the school was rebuilt into the National University of Defense Technology under the direct care of Chairman Deng Xiaoping. In 1999, Chairman Jiang Zemin signed an order to establish a new National University of Defense Technology, and in 2003, he inscribed the school motto "Virtue and Knowledge, Strengthen the Army and Revitalize the Country" for the school, and issued a call to "work hard to build the National University of Defense Technology into a world-class university with the characteristics of our army". In 2007, Chairman Hu Jintao made an important instruction, encouraging the school to "make new and greater contributions to promoting the strategy of strengthening the army through science and technology and building an innovative country", and in 2009, he named the school's supercomputer system "Tianhe". President Xi Jinping is very concerned about the construction of the university. In November 2013, he made a special visit to the university and delivered an important speech, demanding "to speed up the construction of a world-class university with the characteristics of our army, and strive to make the National University of Defense Technology a highland for the cultivation of high-quality new military talents and a highland for independent innovation in national defense science and technology." In July 2017, President Xi Jinping personally presented the military flag to the university and delivered a speech: "The National University of Defense Technology is a highland for the cultivation of high-quality new military talents and independent innovation in national defense science and technology. You must keep up with the development trend of world military science and technology, adapt to the requirements of winning information-based local wars, focus on the cultivation of general professional talents and joint combat support talents, strengthen the research of core key technologies, and strive to build The construction and development of the school has always been highly valued by the state and the military. It is one of the 156 key construction projects of the first five-year plan, one of the 20 key universities in the country determined by the CPC Central Committee in 1959, one of the first batch of institutions approved by the State Council to confer master's and doctoral degrees, one of the first 22 institutions in the country to pilot graduate schools, one of the first batch of institutions to enter the national "211 Project" construction plan, and the only military institution to enter the national "985 Project" construction. In 2017, it was selected as a Class A university in the first round of the national "Double First-Class" construction, and in 2022, it will continue to be selected in the new round of the national "Double First-Class" construction. The school adheres to the discipline construction idea of "focusing on engineering, combining science and engineering, strengthening the foundation, and implementing engineering", and has formed a comprehensive discipline and professional system covering 8 categories including science, engineering, military science, management, literature, economics, law, and education.
