Northwest University originated from Shaanxi University Hall and Imperial University Hall Quick-training Academy of Science and Technology in 1902. It was named Northwest University in 1912. It was renamed National Northwest University in 1923. In 1937, the National Peking University, Peking Normal University, Beiyang Institute of Technology and Peking Research Institute moved west to Shaanxi to form the National Xi'an Temporary University. In 1938, it was renamed National Northwest United University. In 1939, it was renamed National Northwest University. After the founding of New China, it became a comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1950, it was renamed Northwest University. In 1958, it was transferred to the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province. In 1978, it was designated as a national key university. It is now a national "double first-class" construction university, a national "211 Project" construction university, and a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Shaanxi Province. In the long-term development process, Northwest University has formed the school-running philosophy of "carrying forward the national spirit, integrating world ideas, and shouldering the heavy responsibility of building the Northwest", bringing together many famous teachers, producing a number of high-level academic achievements, and cultivating a large number of outstanding talents who are capable of serving the world. It enjoys a good academic reputation and social prestige, and is known as the "mother of Chinese petroleum talents", "cradle of economists" and "cradle of writers". The school currently has three campuses: Taibai Campus, Taoyuan Campus, and Chang'an Campus, with a total area of more than 2,360 acres. There are 24 colleges (departments) and graduate schools, 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, 1 directly affiliated hospital, and 7 non-directly affiliated hospitals. There are 88 undergraduate majors, of which 37 majors have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction points. The school currently has 24 doctoral degree authorization points (including 23 first-level disciplines and 1 professional degree authorization category), 57 master's degree authorization points (including 37 first-level disciplines and 20 professional degree authorization categories), and 24 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are 2 national “Double First-Class” disciplines, Geology and Archaeology, 1 first-level national key discipline (covering 5 second-level disciplines), 4 second-level national key disciplines and 1 national key (cultivation) discipline. The school currently has 3 Ministry of Education Basic Disciplines Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0 bases, 7 national talent training bases and a national college student cultural quality education base, 7 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center. The school has 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 national "Belt and Road" joint laboratory, 1 national innovative talent training demonstration base, 3 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 3 national-local joint engineering research centers, 3 higher education discipline innovation and talent introduction bases, 1 provincial and ministerial co-construction national key laboratory (under preparation); 1 national Silk Road Archaeology Cooperation Research Center, 1 Central United Front Work Department, the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Education, and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission's four-ministerial research base for building a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, 1 Ministry of Education's key research base for humanities and social sciences, 3 Ministry of Education's country and regional research filing centers, 1 National Ethnic Affairs Commission's "Belt and Road" country and regional research center, and 114 provincial and ministerial scientific research bases. The university has more than 3,100 faculty members, including 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 dual-appointed academicians (professors), 1 academician of the International Academy of the History of Science, 1 academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 1 foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, 12 winners of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, 13 winners of the National Excellent Young Scientist Fund, 18 candidates for the National "Million Talent Project", 4 national-level teaching masters, 26 people in the "New Century Excellent Talent Support Program" of the Ministry of Education, and 6 "Young and Middle-aged Science and Technology Innovation Leaders" of the Ministry of Science and Technology. There are more than 28,000 students, including more than 13,700 undergraduates, more than 14,600 postgraduates, and more than 500 international students. The school has won the first and second prizes of the National Natural Science Award, the second prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first and second prizes of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the China Patent Gold Award, and the first prize of the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) of Higher Education Institutions. The university attaches great importance to foreign scientific and cultural exchanges, and has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 120 universities and research institutions in nearly 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, etc. The Encyclopedia Britannica once listed Northwestern University as one of the world's famous universities.
