The name of Fudan University is taken from "The Sun and the Moon are Brilliant, and Fudan is Come" in "The Legend of Shangshu". It was founded in 1905, formerly known as Fudan Public School, and renamed Fudan University in 1917. It is the first institution of higher learning independently founded by the Chinese. . The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the Fourth National Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University. Currently, the school has 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary subjects; in 2021, 20 disciplines of the school will be selected for the second round The "Double First-class" construction disciplines include 3 more disciplines selected than in the first round. Currently, Fudan University has 35 directly affiliated colleges (departments) and 18 affiliated hospitals (two of which are under construction).
