The school was founded in 1973, and was named the 531 Mechanical Industry School. In 1978, it was renamed the Zhongyuan Mechanical Industry School. In 2001, it was upgraded to a higher vocational school - Henan Industrial Vocational and Technical College. It was successively affiliated to the Fifth Ministry of Machinery Industry, the Ministry of Ordnance Industry, the Machinery Industry Committee, the Ministry of Machinery and Electronics Industry, the China Ordnance Industry Corporation, and the Henan Provincial People's Government (managed by the Henan Provincial Defense Science, Technology and Industry Office). It is now managed by the Henan Provincial Education Working Committee and the Provincial Education Department. The school is a national backbone higher vocational college, a national high-quality junior college, and a construction unit of the "China-style high-level higher vocational school and professional construction plan". It is an "excellent" college in the talent training level assessment of higher vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of modern apprenticeship pilot colleges of the Ministry of Education, and the first batch of national teaching quality diagnosis and improvement pilot colleges. It has won the National Advanced Employment Work Unit, the National Skilled Talent Cultivation Outstanding Contribution Award, the National Advanced Unit of Vocational and Technical Education, the Seventh Huang Yanpei Vocational Education Award Excellent School Award, and the National Vocational College "Top 50 Internship Management", "Top 50 Teaching Resources", "Top 50 Industry-Education Integration", and has been listed in all the lists of the 2021, 2022, and 2023 China Vocational Education Quality Annual Report. The school is located in Nanyang, a national historical and cultural city, with a total area of more than 2,000 acres, a total school building area of 730,000 square meters, a total fixed asset value of 1.22 billion yuan, a total value of 430 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment, a total collection of more than 3 million books, and more than 18,000 full-time students. The school has 13 teaching units and 62 majors. There are 2 majors in the "Project to Enhance the Professional Service Industry Development Capability" supported by the central government, 4 undergraduate majors jointly run with Henan University of Science and Technology, 5 key majors of national key higher vocational colleges, 5 modern apprenticeship pilot majors of the Ministry of Education, 6 key majors of the Innovation and Development Action Plan, 7 specialty majors in Henan Province, and 9 majors in Henan Province's "Professional Comprehensive Reform Pilot". The school currently has more than 1,000 faculty and staff, including 1 national teaching team, 3 national vocational education teacher teaching innovation teams, 1 Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities, 2 national curriculum ideological and political teaching teams, 3 national model party branches for party building work, and 157 experts who enjoy special government allowances from the State Council, national technical experts, provincial high-level talents, and provincial vocational education experts. The school has deepened the reform of education and teaching, and won 4 second prizes in national teaching achievement awards and 43 provincial higher education teaching achievement awards.
