Ningbo University was founded in 1986 with donations from Mr. Yue-Kong Pao, the world's shipping magnate. Comrade Deng Xiaoping wrote the name of the school. It is a national "double first-class" university, a university jointly built by Zhejiang Province, the Ministry of Education, and Ningbo City, a university jointly built by the State Oceanic Administration and Ningbo City, and one of the first batch of key universities in Zhejiang Province. General Secretary Xi Jinping once instructed during his tenure in Zhejiang: "I hope that Ningbo University will strive to build itself into a first-class local comprehensive university in China, and make new and greater contributions to Zhejiang's construction of an innovative province and the construction of a socialist harmonious society." During the process of its establishment and development, the university has received the care, support and help of party committees and governments at all levels, the "Ningbo Gang" at home and abroad, and all sectors of society. At the beginning of its establishment, the university was assisted by Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, and the former Hangzhou University, and started its school-running journey from a high starting point. In 1992, it was included in the first batch of colleges and universities for national college enrollment; in 1995, it passed the first batch of undergraduate teaching work qualification evaluation of the former State Education Commission; in 1996, the former Ningbo University, Ningbo Normal University and Zhejiang Fisheries College Ningbo Branch merged to form the new Ningbo University; in 2000, it was listed as a provincial key construction university by the Zhejiang Provincial Government; in 2011, it became a university jointly built by the State Oceanic Administration and Ningbo City; in 2012, it became a university jointly built by Zhejiang Province, the Ministry of Education, and Ningbo City; in 2015, it was selected as the first batch of key construction universities in Zhejiang Province; in 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. After several generations of hard work and entrepreneurship, the school has become a comprehensive teaching and research university, and its comprehensive strength ranks among the top 100 universities in the country. It has 12 disciplines, including economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary disciplines. It has 23 colleges/faculties (there is also an independent college - the School of Science and Technology), 10 school-level directly affiliated research institutions, and 5 directly affiliated hospitals. According to data released by ESI, 12 disciplines, including engineering, clinical medicine, chemistry, materials science, animal and plant science, agricultural science, environment and ecology, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, computer science, physics, and general social sciences, are among the top 1% of academic institutions in the world. The disciplines of aquaculture and mechanics are listed as the "14th Five-Year Plan" provincial peak disciplines and provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines respectively. There are 9 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 9 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 31 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 27 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 59 undergraduate enrollment majors. It has the right to recommend master's students without examination, the qualification to recruit international students to come to China with the Chinese government scholarship and the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship, and the qualification to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are 20,107 full-time undergraduates, 12,400 postgraduates (including 210 international students), 1,150 international students (including 975 degree students), and 10,895 students in higher education and continuing education. There are 3,155 faculty members (including 2,148 teaching and research personnel), 553 of whom have senior professional and technical titles, 718 have deputy senior professional and technical titles, and 1,725 have doctoral degrees; there are also 583 part-time teachers. The main campus is located in the northern area of Ningbo Higher Education Park, and there is also a Meishan campus. The school covers a total area of 3,055 acres. The library has a total area of 51,000 square meters, with 3.2396 million paper books and 2.584 million electronic books. The total value of the equipment is 13.100 million yuan. There are 20 national first-class undergraduate courses, 4 national quality resource sharing courses, 1 national quality video open course, 2 English-taught brand courses for international students in China of the Ministry of Education, 182 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 16 provincial quality online open courses, and 223 collaborative education projects of the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Department. The quality of postgraduate education ranks among the top 100 in the country. There is 1 national demonstration base for joint training of master's degree postgraduates in education, 7 joint training bases for postgraduates in Zhejiang Province, and 2 second prizes for national teaching achievements, 2 first prizes for provincial teaching achievements, and 1 first prize for provincial basic education achievements. There is 1 special prize for practical teaching achievements of national agricultural professional degree postgraduates, 3 first prizes for teaching achievements of the Provincial Education Society, 31 provincial excellent demonstration courses, 81 provincial excellent practical achievements of postgraduates, 35 excellent cases of national professional degree teaching committees, and 102 provincial excellent postgraduate teaching cases. The school vigorously promotes innovative and entrepreneurial characteristic education. For seven consecutive years, the university has won the "Advanced Collective Award for Colleges and Universities" in the China "Internet +" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (only four universities in the country), and ranked second in the country in the total number of gold medals in the 6th and 7th China International "Internet +" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. In the 8th China International "Internet +" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the university won one "Best Employment Promotion Award" (only two in the country), achieving a breakthrough in the gold medal of the industry track. In the first nine competitions, the university won 33 gold and 29 silver medals, and the total number of gold medals ranked third in the country. For 11 consecutive years, the university has won the "Champion Cup" in the national "Challenge Cup" series of competitions, becoming one of the five universities in the country to win the championship cup for 11 consecutive times. The university has co-built 11 local research institutes with governments at all levels, 27 school-enterprise research institutes with leading enterprises, and 150 school-enterprise (local) scientific research cooperation platforms with local governments, enterprises and institutions. It has achieved 1 patent transfer of more than 10 million yuan and 3 investment valuations. It has been rated as one of the top ten outstanding cases of industry-university-research cooperation in Chinese universities. For four consecutive years, it has won 9 "China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation and Promotion Awards", the only highest honor award for the combination of government, industry, university, research and finance, and won the "Golden Bridge Award", the highest award in the national technology market, and won the Outstanding Contribution Excellent Project Award and the first prize. It won the championship of the University Entrepreneurship World Cup Global Finals, achieving a zero breakthrough for the Chinese team in this event. The school vigorously promotes internationalization of education, fully implements the work spirit of "improving quality and efficiency" in the new era of overseas study in China, and strives to cultivate outstanding international students with solid professional knowledge, strong academic ability, and knowledge and friendship with China. It has established cooperative and exchange relations with more than 100 foreign universities and research institutions, and has been selected as the first batch of construction units of "Zhejiang Province's Internationalized Characteristic Universities" and Ningbo International Cultural Exchange Base, and has passed the national college quality certification for overseas study in China. The school has one Sino-foreign cooperatively-run institution, the Ningbo University-Angers University Joint College, and three Sino-foreign cooperatively-run programs, including the Sino-French Clinical Medicine Dual Doctoral Program, the Sino-Australian MBA Program, and the Sino-US Actuarial Undergraduate Program. There are two Confucius Institutes, the Northern Lights Confucius Institute in Iceland and the Confucius Institute at the University of Tamatave in Madagascar. There are currently three reverse "2+2" projects co-built with the Russian State University of Management, Changshin University in South Korea, and Binus University in Indonesia. It has been approved by the Ministry of Education's China-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center for International Chinese Teachers Scholarship Special Online Project, the China Scholarship "University Graduate Program" of the National Scholarship Fund for the 2022-2023 Academic Year, and the Provincial International Student National Conditions Education Master Studio Construction Unit. It took the lead in establishing the "China-Central and Eastern European University Sports Education and Research" International Alliance. The school has been approved for two international cooperative training projects for innovative talents from the China Scholarship Fund, including the "International Cooperation Training Project for Innovative Talents in Mechanics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology" and the "International Cooperation Training Project for High-level Innovative Talents in Clinical Medicine". So far, a total of 8 people have been sent to international organizations such as the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations International Law Commission for internships. The school vigorously promotes exchanges and cooperation with Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has carried out inter-school academic and educational exchanges and cooperation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Macau, and Macau University of Science and Technology, and signed relevant agreements. It has signed inter-school academic exchange and cooperation agreements with 23 Taiwanese universities, including National Taiwan Ocean University, Soochow University, and Fu Jen Catholic University. In 1993, the first cross-strait exchange and visit between college students was opened, and college students from Ningbo and Taiwan visited each other 25 times. The exchange and training activities between college students from Ningbo and Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong have been listed as a 10,000-person plan project of the Ministry of Education.
