In 1966, the Technical Education Steering Committee Report first proposed the establishment of a college in Dundalk. In 1968, the regional college construction plan was launched. In the late 1990s, all technical colleges in the country were redefined as polytechnics. The Dundalk Regional Institute of Technology was renamed Dundalk Institute of Technology on January 28, 1998.
