History
Founded in 1963 by the Congolese Protestant Committee (a coalition of Protestant churches operating in Congo), it was originally named the Free University of the Congo (Université Libre du Congo), with only 50 students and 6 full-time professors at the time of its establishment.
In 1971, it became part of the National University of Zaire.
In 1981, it separated from the National University of Zaire, along with the University of Kinshasa and the University of Lubumbashi, and became the current University of Kisangani.
