The predecessor of the school was Ahmadu Bello College, established in 1960, located in the School of Arabic Studies in the old city of Kano. In 1962, after the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, it was renamed Abdullahi Bayero College. In 1964, the college moved to a temporary campus at the old airport hotel in Kano and welcomed the first 10 undergraduates studying for the Bachelor of Arts degree program of Ahmadu Bello University. In 1975, Abdullahi Bayero College was upgraded to a university college, authorized to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University, and renamed Abdullahi Bayero University College. In 1977, the federal government upgraded all university colleges in the country to fully-fledged universities, and Abdullahi Bayero University College officially became Bayero University Kano.
