In 1975, Abdullahi Bayero College was upgraded to a university college, authorized to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University, and renamed Abdullahi Bayero University College. In 1977, the federal government upgraded all university colleges in the country to fully-fledged universities, and Abdullahi Bayero University College officially became Bayero University Kano.
