The university's tradition of higher education dates back to 1657, when Bishop Benedict Kish Dy founded a college. In 1660, the Roman Emperor Leopold I granted the college the same privileges as other universities of the Habsburg dynasty.
In 1773, the college became a public institution. In 1850, it was transformed into a law school until 1921.
In 1959, Pavol Josef Safarik University was officially established in Košice. It integrated part of the medical department of Comenius University and the philosophy department of Prešov Education College, etc., and has continued to grow and develop since then, and has added several colleges.
