The school was founded on October 4, 1875, when it was called Franz Joseph Chernivtsi University. At that time, Chernivtsi was the capital of the Principality of Bukovina, which belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, Bukovina became part of the Kingdom of Romania, and the university was renamed Universitatea Regele Carol I din Cernăuţi.

1940 After the Soviet Union occupied northern Bukovina in 1989, the region was affiliated to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, the main language of the university was changed to Ukrainian, the school was renamed Chernivtsi National University, and it was greatly expanded and reorganized.

In 1989, the school was named after the famous Ukrainian writer Yuri Fedkovich.

In 2000, the university was awarded national status.
