1988: It opened on February 10, 1988 under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Uganda and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with only 80 students and two degree programs.

1990: In 1990, the Ugandan Parliament enacted the law "Islamic University in Uganda Act", which formally established the status of the university in Uganda.
