Introduction

Leipzig University is located in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe and the second oldest university in Germany. It was founded in 1409 and has a nearly 600-year uninterrupted history of teaching and research.

History

In 1409, due to the split of Charles University in Prague, many teachers and students returned to Germany. Elector Frederick I of Saxony and his brother William II founded the University of Leipzig. On September 9 of the same year, it was recognized by Pope Alexander V and officially established on December 2. Its art department accepted teachers and students returning from Prague.

In 1544, after the Reformation, the church and monastery buildings in Leipzig were donated to the university.

1879 In 1923, German psychologist Wilhelm Wundt established the first psychology laboratory while serving as a professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig, marking the beginning of modern psychology.

In 1923, the Royal Veterinary School of Saxony moved from Dresden to Leipzig and became the Veterinary Department of the University of Leipzig.

From 1953 to 1991, the school was named "Karl Marx University of Leipzig", and in 1991 it was restored to its original name.

In 2009, when the University of Leipzig celebrated its 600th anniversary, the main campus in the city center was officially completed and put into use.
