Introduction
The University of Duisburg-Essen is a German public comprehensive university and one of the youngest and largest universities in Germany. It is located in the heart of the Ruhr metropolitan area in North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. It is a member of the Ruhr University Alliance (UA Ruhr) and the European University Alliance Aurora.

Number of students and faculty: As of October 2023, the school has 40,772 students, 520 professors and 4,035 faculty members.

History
University of Duisburg: The earliest university in Duisburg was officially founded in 1655, and its first enrollment dates back to January 1652, when the school had faculties of theology, law, medicine and philosophy. In the second half of the 18th century, its importance began to decline, and the old university closed in 1818. In 1881, the "Rhine-Westphalian Cottage School" was established in Bochum, moved to Duisburg in 1891 and nationalized in 1894 and renamed the "Royal School of Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgy", and in 1938 it was renamed the "National Engineering College", in 1971 it became the "Duisburg University of Applied Sciences", in 1972 it and the Ruhr University of Education Duisburg Department established the "Duisburg University", and in 1994 it was renamed the "Gerhard Mercator University-Duisburg University".
Essen University: In April 1901, the "National Municipal Trade School" was established in Essen, and in 1908 it was divided into the "Royal Mechanical Engineering School" and the "Royal Building Trade School", and in 1937 and 1938 the two schools were renamed the "National Building School" and the "National Mechanical Engineering Engineering School" respectively. In 1971, the National Academy of Mechanical and Civil Engineering, the Folkwang Institute of Design and the Higher Technical College of Social Affairs merged to form the "Essen University of Applied Sciences", and in 1972 the "Essen University" was established.
Merger of the two schools: On January 1, 2003, according to the founding resolution passed by the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament, the comprehensive universities of Duisburg and Essen merged to form the University of Duisburg-Essen. In March 2007, the university jointly established the "Ruhr Metropolitan University Alliance" with the University of Bochum and the University of Dortmund. In 2016, it jointly established the European University Alliance Aurora with eight other universities.
