The university was originally established in Thessaloniki, Greece in 2005 and is the first public university in Greece to teach entirely in English. In 2019, the university underwent a structural reform, merging three technical education colleges in northern Greece to form the current nine schools and thirty-three departments, with campuses in nine cities in Greece.
