The University of Benin was established in 1970. Originally a technical college, it was recognized as a full-fledged university by the National University Commission (Nuc) of Nigeria on July 1, 1971. In April 1972, the name of the school was changed from the Institute of Technology to the University of Benin. On April 1, 1975, the school was taken over by the Nigerian federal government and became a federal university.
